K-Rod Endorses Parnell As Mets Next Closer

This season K-Rod has served as a bullpen mentor for Bobby Parnell, even endorsing the hard throwing righty just last week. Rodriguez said this about Parnell's closing abilities:
He can do it and he knows it. I love that kid. I talk to him a lot and I love him. He's a guy who comes here everyday trying to improve himself to get better and better. He definitely has the tools.
Parnell was crowned the 8th inning man for the Mets in spring training but had a 6.14 ERA in April when he was placed on the disabled list with circulatory issues in his right hand. Since returning to the Mets on June 2nd, he regularly hit 100 mph on radar guns, has only 3 earned runs in 17 1/3 innings with a 1.56 ERA. GM Sandy Alderson told reporters on Wednesday that there are strong candidates in the existing bullpen who can take on the closer role.
Izzy has been in that role before, and pitched effectively in that role and effectively for us, this year. And the way Bobby Parnell has thrown the last three weeks or so has been impressive and also was a factor.
Alderson went on to say that those decisions will be best left up for Terry Collins and pitching coach Dan Warthen to address.

Whispers: K-Rod is NOT on the Yankees wish list

According to the NY Post,  The Yankees are searching for bullpen help, but Francisco Rodriguez is not on their wish list.

A published report had the Mets closer saying he would be willing to accept a setup role in The Bronx, but a source said the Yankees have "no interest" in Rodriguez if he is traded.

Rodriguez has 20 saves, but the Yankees don't like several things about him, from his contract to his off-field behavior.

Doing a deal with their crosstown rivals is also a tricky situation that could inflate what the Mets look for in return.

K-Rod Open to Trade to Contender Team As Setup Guy

K-Rod has stated that he would give up his closer role if traded to a contender team. "If I am going to be traded, obviously I want the opportunity to close out games, but if it's going to be good teams like the Yankees or the Rays, and it's going to be for two months, I can go out there and help them out," Rodriguez said Thursday, according to the New York Daily News. The Mets have incentive to dump Rodriguez. He has a $17.5 million vesting option for 2012 that kicks in if he finishes 55 games this season. He has already finshed 28. If a team picks him up to be a setup man, that issue wouldn't come into play. Rodriguez also has a no-trade clause to 10 teams, but he doesn't think that's a big deal. "Honestly I don't even know what (teams) are on the no-trade clause, I haven't even been asked about that yet," Rodriguez said, according to the Daily News. "I mean I would definitely love to stay here, but I have to be open to every possibility out there right now." Rodriguez has 20 saves and a 3.25 ERA this season but it seems he already has one foot out of the door. So let's all just give him that final shove and leave his uniform out on the front yard.
