Mets Pitcher Johan Santana Shut Down For Season

Mets' starting pitcher Johan Santana has been shut down for the rest of the 2012 season due to inflammation in his lower back. The Mets placed Santana on the DL today, but surgery is not needed. The best thing Johan can do is rest and make sure he is back strong for next season.

After missing all of last season following major shoulder surgery, Santana has come back strong this season. So strong, that on June 1st, he made Mets history. He threw the first ever no-hitter in franchise history against the St.Louis Cardinals. Since then, it has been a struggle for the 33-year old veteran. He has gone 3-7 with an ERA of 8.27 since throwing the no-hitter.

I wouldn't overreact to GM Sandy Alderson's decision to shut him down. With the Mets rapidly falling out of playoff contention, there is really no need to risk further injury this season. Having their ace healthy and ready to go next season is vital to this team if they plan on making a pushing for a playoff berth.

With Santana being shut down for the season, this gives the Mets a chance to call up some young pitching prospects, like Jeurys Familia and Jenrry Mejia. Lets just hope that Johan Santana comes to spring training in 2013 healthy, and ready to go.
