According to Adam Rubin of ESPN NY, the Mets optioned prospect Cesar Puello and right-hander Jeremy Hefner to minor league camp. Hefner had just tossed two scoreless innings against the Houston Astros.
The Mets now have 40 players in major league camp.
They may have expected the news, but that did not make it any less disappointing for Mets top pitching prospects Matt Harvey and Jeurys Familia. Harvey and Familia were among 11 players in the first round of cuts from big league camp Thursday morning.
"I'm not happy about it," Harvey said. "But I can't make the decision, so I'm going to go out there wherever I'm throwing and do the best I can, and keep working and try to get to the level I want to be at."
In addition to Harvey and Familia -- who are ranked Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, by MLB.com on the Mets' Top 20 Prospects list -- the club cut pitchers Jenrry Mejia, Armando Rodriguez, Josh Stinson and Robert Carson, infielders Wilmer Flores, Reese Havens, Zach Lutz and Valentino Pascucci, and outfielders Juan Lagares, Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Matt den Dekker. Mejia, Havens and Nieuwenhuis all might have stuck around longer if not for injuries.
Terry Collins said he will meet Monday morning with Sandy Alderson to discuss the fate of Oliver Perez, with the southpaw part of that meeting at some point. It's clear Perez is not breaking camp with the Mets, so the only question is whether the team immediately releases Perez or waits a little longer. Perez allowed consecutive homers to the first two batters he faced Saturday, has an 8.38 ERA and is not a legitimate candidate in the lefty specialist race.
Collins said Monday morning was the quickest opportunity for everyone to assemble since he and the GM were at different split-squad sites Saturday and the bus left early Sunday for the road game in Jupiter.
"We're going to sit down tomorrow morning and come up with the plan we want to put in place," Collins said. "... We talked on the phone, but we want to sit down and continue the discussion. We're going to probably include Oliver in some of it."
