Preview: Game 13
New York Mets (5-7) at Arizona Diamondbacks (4-11)
Pitching Probables - Zack Wheeler (0-2) 5.73 ERA vs  Josh Collmenter (0-0) 2.25 ERA
TV - SNY - Radio - WOR 710 - 9:40 PM

Preview:

The New York Mets (5-7) will try and forget the dredging they got in Anaheim, as they were 14-2 losers. The Diamondbacks are trying to figure out how to win (4-11) and according to reports, has skipper Kirk Gibson on the hot seat. The D-Backs Rotation has been hit with injuries (Patrick Corbin) and Randall Delgado has not performed, so Josh Collmenter who spent much of his career in the bullpen will start for them. The Mets players on the team have seen him in relief have 43 AB's and have 16 hits (.372) off him. Ike Davis has a HR off Collmenter and David Wright has 2 HR's vs Collmenter in his career.

The Mets will counter will young Zack Wheeler. He has gotten beaten up a bit in his last two starts (5.73 ERA)...In Atlanta on April 9th,  he only got through 5 innings, giving up 8 hits, giving up 4 earned runs.. Wheeler (0-2) has pitched in Arizona going 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA. Six Players on the current D'Backs roster are hitting .312 combined with 1 HR vs Wheeler in their career. Aaron Hill hit the HR.

Wheeler has to improve to keep the D'Backs off the board and the Mets have to put up runs. Ike Davis looks like he might get the start.

My Predicted Mets Lineup:

  1. Eric Young Jr. - LF
  2. Daniel Murphy -2B
  3. David Wright - 3B
  4. Curtis Granderson - RF
  5. Ike Davis - 1B

Pitching Probables - RHP Bartolo Colon (1-1 - 2.01 ERA) vs LHP C.J. Wilson (1-1 - 4.61 ERA)
TV - SNY - Radio - WOR 710 AM - 3:35PM

Preview:

The New York Mets look to take the rubber game of the 3 game set from the Angels and it would mark their third straight series win. The Mets also have not seen the .500 mark all season, same goes for the Angels.  The Mets will have to face LHP C.J. Wilson to accomplish that. Only five current Mets have faced him and they only are batting a career .139 off him. Curtis Granderson has 16 AB's vs Wilson and batting .188 vs him. The Mets will have to use Andrew Brown (prob DH) and Josh Satin (1B)  to counter the odds. Career against Wilson, Right hand hitters are batting .252 and lefties are batting .192 off him. Wilson won the last time out (9-1) vs the Astros on the April 7th, he went 8 innings, gave up 4 hits, and 7 K's . He threw 120 pitchers, 71 for strikes.

The Mets will send veteran RHP Bartolo Colon to the hill,  who seems to be a strike throwing machine these days.. His last game he won (4-0) and he threw 101 pitches, 70 for strikes. He also went 7 innings, gave up 6 hits, no runs, and K'd 5. In two starts, he has pitched 211 pitches and 145 of them were for strikes.  That's 69%... Colon knows the Angels far too well. In his career he is 12-6 with a 3.16 ERA vs the Angels. That is over 23 starts. This Group of Angels have had some success against Bartolo. The collectively bat .267 with 4 HR's and 17 RBIs. Mike Trout has two career HR's vs Colon.  Albert Pujols and Raul Ibanez have one HR each off Colon in their careers.  Back to Trout, he owns Colon batting .500 (not a misprint) 7 for 14 off him.

It's going to interesting if Bartolo Colon can baffle the Angels or Blunder in Anaheim. Should be a high scoring affair, but maybe not?.... LGM!

My Gut Mets Predicted lineup:

  1. Eric Young Jr. - LF
  2. Daniel Murphy - 2B

The New York Mets (4-6) look to bounce back against the Anaheim Angels (5-5) Tonight. The Mets will be facing Jered Weaver who has been horrendous of late. Only 3 current Mets have faced him including Curtis Granderson, who is batting .370 (27 AB's) Off Weaver with 5 HR's.  Weaver has been proned to the long ball giving up 4 this season already.

The Mets will counter with Jon Niese, who has pitched well after having a disturbing spring training.  First time out, Hard luck loser Niese pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, while striking out 4. Jon has faced the Angels before, he is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA vs Anaheim. The current team that has faced him are batting collectively .208 vs Niese with 2 HR's (Albert Pujols / Raul Ibanez). Niese also has struck out 11 of them as well.

Lets see if the Mets can hammer some long balls off Weaver and hopefully Niese can keep improving on what he has done already, LGM!

Pitching Probables - Dillon Gee (0-0) 4.50 ERA vs Tyler Skaggs (1-0) 0.00 ERA
TV - SNY - Radio - WOR 710 - 10:05PM

Tyler Skaggs is slated to take the mound and help the Angels avoid losing their first four home games for the second straight season Friday night against the New York Mets.

The Angels (4-5) re-acquired Skaggs from Arizona in a three-team, four-player trade in December, hoping he could add depth to a rotation that ranked 22nd in the majors with a 4.30 ERA.

The 22-year-old left-hander, a first-round draft pick by Los Angeles in 2009, looked capable of doing more than that Saturday. He dominated Houston, yielding an unearned run and four hits in eight innings of a 5-1 victory.

Skaggs has never faced the Mets in his career.

On the offensive side, Albert Pujols is 2 for 12 at home, but he hit safely in each game of the road trip, connecting for two-run homers in each of the last two contests.

The star first baseman is 8 for 18 (.444) with two homers, four RBIs and six runs over his last four meetings with the Mets, but those came in 2011 with St. Louis.

The Mets (4-5) will have Dillon Gee (0-0 4.50 ERA) on the Mound vs the Angels. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.60 ERA on the road in interleague play.

Gee gave up two homers in Saturday's 6-3 win over Cincinnati. He surrendered the second a two-run shot before being pulled with one out in the eighth, but was off the hook for the loss after Ike Davis' walkoff grand slam.

Gee has held Albert Pujols hitless in three at-bats. He has only faced three batters on the Angels and they are batting .190 off him (4 for 21).

Eric Young Jr. was key to the success in the Atlanta series, going 5 for 12 (.417) with five stolen bases and as many runs. The left fielder was 2 for 19 with nine strikeouts over the first five games.

The Mets and Angels have split 12 all-time meetings, but New York has won four of six in Anaheim.

The Brewers try to cap the season with a four-game sweep of the Mets on Sunday at Citi Field. The Mets will also celebrate Mike Piazza going into the Mets Hall of Fame.

Milwaukee (74-87) won Saturday 4-2 in 10 innings to pick up its 12th win in 17 games, a far departure from its 2-8 start to the season. Carlos Gomez snapped out of a 3-for-25 slump with four hits, including the go-ahead single.

The Mets (73-88) have lost three straight and will finish with a losing record for a fifth straight year, but Collins is close to an agreement to remain manager as the club attempts to build a winner.

Fielding an inexperienced lineup depleted by injuries and trades, Collins has kept the Mets competitive down the stretch without most of his top players.

One thing Collins has been unable to do is find a way to beat Milwaukee at Citi Field.

The Brewers have won 10 of 11 at the Mets' ballpark.

A win Saturday would clinch Milwaukee's fifth series victory in its last seven to end the year. The club has won nine of 13.

Segura has missed nine straight contests due to a strained right hamstring, but manager Ron Roenicke said he could start Saturday. He's hitting .296 in 145 games and his 44 stolen bases have him tied with New York's Eric Young for the NL lead.

Wright, who has played in five games since returning from his own strained right hamstring, missed Friday's contest due to a thumb injury. He cleared concussion tests after a changeup to the helmet forced him to leave Thursday's opener, but jammed his right thumb while hitting the dirt on the same play. The Mets (73-87) could use his bat after totaling 11 runs over their last five games.

Carlos Gomez is scheduled to return from his suspension Friday night when the Brewers attempt to continue their success at Citi Field.

The center fielder is expected back in the lineup, and that should provide a lift. He leads Milwaukee with a career-high 23 homers and his 71 RBIs are a personal best.

That power and production has been on display over the past nine games. He's only 7 for 32 (.219) in that stretch, but has four homers, a double, triple and eight RBIs.

Milwaukee looks to win for the fifth time in six games overall as it sends Yovani Gallardo (11-10, 4.23 ERA) to the mound.

The right-hander has been impressive since returning from a strained left hamstring, going 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA in seven starts.

The Mets, who have a 3.78 ERA this season, will start Dillon Gee (12-10, 3.54 ERA). The right-hander is 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA in his last five starts and is seeking to match his career high for victories, set in 2011.

Gee allowed four runs over six innings Saturday in Philadelphia but got enough support for a 5-4 win. He gave up three runs in his final frame amid a heavy downpour.

Gee is seven innings shy of reaching 200 for the first time, a remarkable feat for someone who entered this season after surgery to remove a blood clot in his right shoulder.

Gee dropped to 0-2 with a 7.15 ERA in two career starts against Milwaukee after permitting seven runs in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-0 loss May 15, 2012.

Mike Leake will try to continue his dazzling stretch and help pull the Reds closer to the top of the NL Central on Tuesday night against the New York Mets.

Cincinnati (90-67) has qualified for the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the "The Big Red Machine" won World Series titles in 1975 and 1976.

Shin-Soo Choo booked the latest trip Monday, when he hit a long drive off the top of the wall in left-center to drive in Devin Mesoraco and clinch a 3-2, 10-inning win over New York.

Giving the ball to Leake (14-6, 3.21 ERA) should give Cincinnati a strong chance to potentially close that gap, while the Cardinals host Washington.

Leake has been utterly dominant of late, winning three straight starts behind a 0.84 ERA.

He's thrown a career-high 20 1-3 scoreless innings over that stretch, becoming the ninth Reds starter to reach at least 20 since 1974 and first since Mat Latos went 21 innings from April 19-May 5.

The Reds, who are trying to move closer to securing a third playoff appearance in four years, send Johnny Cueto to the mound in Monday night's series opener with the New York Mets.

Cueto (5-2, 3.02 ERA) missed the start of the 2011 season with arm trouble, then went 19-9 with a 2.78 ERA in 2012 to help the Reds win the NL Central. But after a healthy season, he left Game 1 of the division series against San Francisco after only eight pitches with pulled muscles in his side.

The right-hander was enjoying a solid start to 2013 before straining a lat muscle in a loss to Texas on June 28, forcing him to the DL. He was activated last Monday, and threw five scoreless innings in his 6-1 win over Houston.

Though Cueto said he felt fine after that outing, Baker is taking a cautious approach, especially with the playoffs right around the corner. Cincinnati (89-67) still is in the mix for a second straight Central crown while leading Washington by five games for a wild-card spot.

The Mets can win their fourth straight meeting with the Phillies on Sunday in Philadelphia, though they'll have to overcome the dominant Cliff Lee.

A win Sunday would mark the Mets' fourth straight win in the overall series, something they haven't accomplished since April 2008. Saturday's result also brought them within one game of the third-place Phillies (71-83) as New York, which has won five of seven, tries to avoid its fifth straight fourth-place finish in the NL East.

Wright is batting .413 with five homers and 12 RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak against the Phillies, and is 8 for 28 off with seven strikeouts lifetime against Lee (14-6, 2.95 ERA).

The left-hander is 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA in his last six starts, including a win in New York on Aug. 26, his second victory in three matchups this year.

Winners of four of six, the Mets (69-84) are trying to overtake the Phillies (71-82) and finish above fourth in the NL East for the first time since 2008.

Gee (11-10, 3.47 ERA) opened his season in brutal fashion April 9, when he gave up a season-worst seven runs over three innings in Philadelphia. He then was reached for six runs - five earned - in five innings there June 22 but did not get a decision in New York's 8-7 loss.

In each game, the Phillies hit three homers off Gee.

Gee, 0-2 with a 13.26 ERA in his last five appearances at Citizens Bank Park, may fare better with first baseman Ryan Howard sidelined with an inflamed left knee. Howard had three of those home runs and six in 15 lifetime at-bats versus the right-hander.
