Fred Wilpon Speaks Out Port St. Lucie

New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon says he plans on owning the team for a long time despite financial troubles caused by the collapse of the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme.

Wilpon said Monday he is optimistic in a favorable outcome in the lawsuit brought by the trustee against the Mets owners to recover money for victims of the scheme.

He expressed optimism that the Mets will host the 2013 All-Star game and said the decision on whether to sign third baseman David Wright to a long-term contract is in the hands of general manager Sandy Alderson.

In regards to the payroll drop the Mets have taken, Wilpon says spending could increase during the season.

Rehab Update: David Wright went 1-2 with a double last night for St. Lucie

The Mets are beginning to look a lot like sellers, but they are finally close to getting their third baseman back.

David Wright went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and a run scored last night in his first minor league rehab game with High-A St. Lucie. According to Greg Auman of ESPN New York, he also played five innings at third base.

“It felt good. It was obviously good to get back out there,” said Wright, who walked in the third inning and struck out swinging in the fifth at Joker Marchant Stadium. “A little rusty, and obviously I need a few more at-bats, but overall, I’m excited about how the first game went. So far, so good.”
