The New York Mets traded Ike Davis to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, in exchange for right-handed reliever Zack Thornton and a player to be named later.

The deal was announced just minutes prior to the Mets game against the Atlanta Braves.

Davis was made available to reporters outside the Mets clubhouse as the game got underway.

"Honestly, it's a little weird," Davis said. "I've been with the Mets organization for a long time, and made some really good friendships and stuff like that. That's the toughest part, I think.

"I really had a blast in New York. I made my dreams come true, childhood dreams come true, playing in the big leagues here. But it's just a stepping-stone. It happens to a lot of people, getting traded. Now [I'll] go help my team in Pittsburgh."

Thornton, 25, was pitching for the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis. He will report to the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas.

The Mets filled Davis' spot on the 25-man major league roster with outfielder Chris Young, who was on the disabled list.

"We're very happy with the trade," Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said. "We're happy for Ike, in the sense that he'll get another opportunity elsewhere. It's a situation that we needed to resolve here, and we're happy with the return."

A source close to the situation said, “He needed a fresh start. It was an awful situation with him knowing they didn’t want him. He feels like a huge weight has lifted off him.”

Nick Evans Signs with Pirates

Nick Evans, who had been with the Mets since the team made him him a fifth-round draft selection in 2004, has signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates, his agent Marc Agar told the Daily News. Evans agreed to a minor league deal, with an invite to spring training.

In 2735 at-bats across eight minor league seasons, Evans posted an .822 OPS, and hit 107 home runs. In parts of four major league seasons, he had a .712 OPS. Frequently shuffling between the major and minors, Evans --who always impressed the organization and much of the fan base with his character and work ethic -- did not see many sustained opportunities with the Mets.

The Mets had been willing to re-sign Evans, despite removing him from the 40-man roster this month. Agar said that there was "extraordinary interest" in his client, and leaving the Mets was a difficult decision for Evans.
