Final Score: New York 2, Philadelphia 1 (14 innings)

Ronny Paulino capped off his career-high five-hit night with an RBI double in the 14th inning, as the New York Mets snuck past the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-1, to avoid a three-game sweep at Citizens Bank Park.

Making his first start of the season, Paulino went 5-for-7 for the Mets, who snapped a three-game skid. Carlos Beltran drove in the other run for New York.

Chris Young gave up two hits and struck out seven in a seven-inning start. Taylor Buchholz (1-0) pitched two scoreless frames to pick up the win.

Ryan Howard knocked in the lone run for the Phillies, who were coming off a record-setting April. Philadelphia went 18-8 in April to set a club record for wins in the first full month of a season, surpassing the 1993 squad that won the National League pennant.

Starter Cliff Lee gave up one run on eight hits over seven frames. Kyle Kendrick (1-2) allowed one run on four hits and walked two in three innings to take the loss.

"Try to forget about it, go home and get some sleep," Howard said of the team's offensive showing. "We hit some balls hard. We hit them right at people. Those things happen sometimes."

The game featured 12 pitchers -- six from each side.

After stranding runners on second and third in the 13th, the Mets took the lead in the 14th. David Wright led off with a single and moved to second two batters later on Jason Bay's base hit. Ike Davis' deep fly ball to center allowed Wright to move to third. Paulino then doubled to left to make it a 2-1 game.

The Mets loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning, but Davis grounded out.

Philadelphia's best chance to score early on came in the third. Brian Schneider doubled to right with one out. Lee flied out and Shane Victorino grounded out to end the threat.

New York broke the scoreless tie in the fifth. With two outs, Wright singled off the wall in left. Beltran followed with an RBI double to right- center field.

Young retired 10 straight batters before giving up a one-out walk to Howard in the seventh. Ben Francisco was then hit by a pitch. After Raul Ibanez struck out, Pete Orr walked to load the bases. Young got out of the jam by getting Schneider to go down swinging.

The Phillies tied the game in the eighth. Jason Isringhausen walked John Mayberry Jr. and Jimmy Rollins to put two men on with two outs. Tim Byrdak came in from the bullpen to face Howard, who hit an RBI single to left. Francisco Rodriguez came in to get the final out, but not before Philly made it a 1-1 game.

The game went into extras after Philadelphia stranded runners on first and second in the ninth.
