Preview: Game 102 - Mets at Brewers - Gee vs Garza

Preview: Game 102
New York Mets (48-53) at Milwaukee Brewers (57-45)

Probable Pitchers:
Dillon Gee (4-2, 2.92 ERA) vs Matt Garza (6-7, 4.04 ERA)
TV - SNY - Radio - WOR 710 AM - First Pitch: 8:10 PM

Preview:

Matt Garza should be pretty well-rested when he takes the mound Thursday night.

That's because the Milwaukee Brewers right-hander followed some time off for the All-Star break with the shortest start of his career, leaving him with fewer than 50 pitches thrown in the last two weeks as he gets ready to face the visiting New York Mets in the opener of a four-game series.

Garza (6-7, 4.04 ERA) allowed two runs and three hits over 7 2/3 innings in his final outing before the break, a 9-1 home loss to Philadelphia on July 10. He had eight days off before starting in Washington on Saturday, and the rest didn't help.

Garza gave up five runs and five hits while walking two and recording just one out while throwing 42 pitches.

Garza, who went 4-2 with a 2.35 ERA in his previous six starts, also said he wasn't concerned.

The Brewers (57-45) considered bringing Garza back earlier, but he said he didn't want to mess up anyone else's routine.

The decision has paid off for NL Central-leading Milwaukee, which is coming off a three-game sweep of Cincinnati highlighted by a 2.29 ERA from its starters. Kyle Lohse pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball and Mark Reynolds homered twice in Wednesday's 5-1 victory.

The Brewers have won five of seven following a 1-11 stretch.

The Brewers will next face Dillon Gee, who also lost his first start after the break. Gee (4-2, 2.92) allowed four runs and five hits -- two homers -- in five innings of a 6-0 defeat at San Diego on Saturday.

The Mets (48-53) enter this series after Bartolo Colon was perfect through 6 2/3 innings of a 3-2 win over Seattle on Wednesday. They took two of three against the Mariners and have split the first six contests of a 10-game trip.

Gee has lost all three starts against Milwaukee behind a 6.75 ERA, while Garza hasn't received a decision in two outings versus the Mets despite posting a 1.93 ERA.

Neither pitched when the Brewers took two of three in New York from June 10-12.

Garza Traded to Cubs???

According to ESPN Chicago,  The Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs have agreed to a multi-player deal that will bring right-handed pitcher Matt Garza to Chicago, according to a major league source.

The deal, which has been agreed to pending physicals, sends right-handed pitcher Chris Archer, outfielder Brandon Guyer, catcher Robinson Chirinos, shortstop Hak-Ju Lee and outfielder Sam Fuld to Tampa for Garza, a minor league pitcher and minor league outfielder Fernando Perez.

Rays have no intentions of trading Garza

Andrew Friedman
According to C. Trent Rosecrans of  CBS SportsRays general manager Andrew Friedman said on a conference call Friday that he has no intentions of trading one of his six starters -- Garza, David Price, James Shield, Wade Davis, Jeff Niemann and Jeremy Hellickson.

"I've said before it's not a situation we look at like having two first basemen," Friedman said, via the Tampa Tribune 's Roger Mooney . "We were very fortunate last year until August that all of our guys took the ball every five days. It doesn't always happen that way. Depth on the starting pitching front is more valuable than anywhere else. At this time our focus is on making deals that fit in our short-term and long-term objectives, and without pinning it to any one area, we're always going to be open-minded to something that fits that criteria. But as far as our motivation? No, that remains the same."

The Rays could be telling the truth and stick to the old saying, you could never have enough pitching or the Rays could be posturing while still looking to make a deal, so they can demand more.  We will see...

Mets Trade Rumors: Mets like Garza, Gorzelanny

Mets GM Sandy Alderson is believed to have inquired on Tom Gorzelanny, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. The Mets like Gorzelanny's ability to strike opponents out and the fact that he would fit into their budget.

Gorzelanny made $800K last year and is set to receive a raise through arbitration. He posted a 4.09 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9 in 136 1/3 innings for the Cubs in 2010. He became more hittable as the season progressed, but pitched respectably in his return to the rotation. The Tigers reportedly contacted the Cubs about Gorzelanny earlier in the month, when the Cubs appeared to be shopping him.

The Mets have also discussed Matt Garza internally, according to Puma. However, he's an unlikely fit, since he's about to earn a substantial raise. Garza earned $3.35MM in 2010 and could earn over $6MM through arbitration in 2011.

I would love for the Mets to steal Matt Garza from the Rays , but what would it cost the Mets?  BJ Upton could be on the block as well due to inappropriate behavior last year. We could dream, right?

Cubs have the inside track on Garza

There are other potential trade partners, though the Cubs appear to have the inside track.

Officials from the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs met for the second time during the winter meetings on Wednesday night to discuss the parameters of a trade that would send right-handed pitcher Matt Garza to Chicago for a number of the Cubs' top prospects, according to multiple sources.

Both the Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers have also had meetings with Tampa about Garza, a major-league source said. It appears, however, that the Cubs have the strongest bid at this point.

A major-league source told ESPNChicago.com that Milwaukee is talking to Carl Pavano about a three-year contract.
