Red Sox Trade SS Jed Lowrie and P Kyle Weiland for P Mark Melancon

According to MLBTR.com , the Red Sox acquired reliever Mark Melancon from the Astros for shortstop Jed Lowrie and starter Kyle Weiland, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.  ESPN's Jerry Crasnick first tweeted that Weiland was traded in a deal that involved a reliever going to Boston.

The deal marks the first trade involving major leaguers by Astros GM Jeff Luhnow and Red Sox GM Ben Cherington since taking over their respective roles.

Melancon, 26, turned in a 2.78 ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 71 appearances last season.  The right-hander won't be arbitration eligible until after the 2013 season and won't hit free agency until after the 2016 campaign.

Bring in the arms - Tim Byrdak on Radar

The Mets and left-hander Tim Byrdak have "mutual interest" in each other and have been discussing a contract, according to Mets Chronicle's  good friend Mike Silva of the New York Baseball Digest.  Silva thinks a deal could be finalized within "the next couple of days."

The Mets were looking for southpaw relief help, and Byrdak fits that bill, holding left-handed batters to a .202/.296/.380 line in his nine Major League seasons.

Byrdak, 37, has a 3.46 ERA over the last four seasons but also averaged five walks per nine innings in that stretch; it's actually an upgrade from his career 5.5 BB/9 rate.

Byrdak spent the last three seasons with the Astros, who released the southpaw in November.

The Beltran Chronicles - A Trade Story

This is a recap for all the Mets Fans who don't know whats going on with the potential Beltran deal. Courtesy of  MLBTR.

On Tuesday at the Winter Meetings, the idea of the Red Sox acquiring Carlos Beltran surfaced.

For the remainder of the day, we heard a few rumblings.

Then "A Source" involved in the discussions told Joel Sherman of the New York Post that nothing was close with Boston and Beltran (Twitter link). Sherman was told yesterday that the Red Sox see Beltran as a fallback.

Then we got an update form SI.com's Jon Heyman, who spoke to one NL executive who estimated the Mets would have to eat about half of Beltran's salary in order to move him (Twitter link).
