Mets resolve position battles, optioned six players

According to the NY Times, Infielder Jordany Valdespin was optioned to the minor leagues with five other players - LHP Garrett Olson, outfielders Adam Loewen and Matt den Dekker, and catchers Lucas May and Rob Johnson — were reassigned to minor league camp.

The moves helped resolve a number of positional battles as well.

Manager Terry Collins said outfielder Mike Baxter would be the Mets’ left-handed bat off the bench, assuming no one is added from outside their current camp. Collins also said Mike Nickeas would be the backup catcher.

Finally, the Mets are watching reliever Tim Byrdak closely to see whether he can recover from surgery on his right knee to be ready for opening day. If not, of the two left-handed relievers remaining in camp, Daniel Herrera would be the likely candidate to fill in over Josh Edgin.
