Preview: Game 108 - Phillies at Mets - Kendrick vs Wheeler

Preview: Game 108
Philadelphia Phillies (47-60) at New York Mets (51-56)

Probable Pitchers:
Kyle Kendrick (5-10, 4.87 ERA) vs Zack Wheeler ( 5-8, 3.64 ERA)
TV - SNY - Radio - WOR 710 AM - First Pitch: 12:10 PM

The Mets attempt to bounce back from another rough performance at the plate and provide some support for Wheeler on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Zack Wheeler (5-8, 3.64 ERA) was tagged for six runs in two innings of an 8-5 loss to Oakland on June 25, but he's rebounded with a 1.41 ERA and a 2-0 record in five starts since.

The right-hander seemed to do that Friday, allowing two runs -- one earned -- and three hits with nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings before Lucas Duda hit a two-run homer in the ninth of a 3-2 win at Milwaukee.

Wheeler, though, didn't get any supporting runs for his second straight game, and he's been backed by three or fewer in 16 of his 21 starts, going 1-8 despite a 3.86 ERA. That includes a 1.42 ERA without a decision over the last three such games, with New York losing two of them.

He got enough help at Philadelphia (47-60) on May 29, striking out nine while allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings of a 4-1 win.

The Mets (51-56) were blanked 6-0 on Tuesday with Chase Utley providing the big blow with his first grand slam since 2010. New York was shut out for the ninth time to surpass its total from all last year and has scored three runs or fewer in 10 of 11 games, batting .193 in that stretch.

Tuesday's win was the fourth in six games for the Phillies, who have batted .291 during that span, 50 points higher than their season mark.

Grady Sizemore's .314 average in 14 games since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley has been a pleasant surprise. His home run Tuesday was his first in a Phillies uniform and his first since April 11 with Boston.

Philadelphia sends Kyle Kendrick (5-10, 4.87) to the mound hoping he can win back-to-back starts for the second time this year. The right-hander earned a 9-5 win over Arizona on Friday, allowing three runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings.

However, Kendrick failed to complete six innings for the fourth straight start, and he's 2-2 with an 8.59 ERA over that stretch.

That was the case in his most recent visit to Citi Field on May 10, yielding four runs in 5 1/3 innings before the offense bailed him out by rallying for a 5-4 win.

He's 0-1 with a 4.67 ERA over his last three starts against the Mets after going 4-0 with a 3.18 ERA in the previous four meetings.

Mets third baseman David Wright is 13 for 34 (.382) with three homers the past four seasons against Kendrick.

Preview: Game 55 - Mets at Phillies - deGrom (0-2) vs Kendrick (1-5)

Preview: Game 55
New York Mets (25-29) at Philadelphia Phillies (24-28)

Probable Pitchers:
Jacob deGrom (0-2) 1.83 ERA vs Kyle Kendrick (1-5) 4.05 ERA
TV - PIX 11 - Radio - WOR 710 AM - First Pitch - 3:05 PM

Preview:

Mets Rookie Jacob deGrom has been outstanding through his first three starts, but they've all ended in losses for New York (25-29) as he's gone 0-2 with a 1.83 ERA.

The New York Mets look to finally give deGrom some support Saturday when they continue a five-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The right-hander has been backed by four runs while becoming the first Mets pitcher to have an ERA under 2.00 through his first three starts without a win since Pete Harnisch and Mike Birkbeck in 1995.

Jim McAndrew is the only Mets rookie to do that through his first four starts in 1968.

The bullpen didn't do deGrom any favors Monday, wasting his 6 2-3 scoreless innings by surrendering five runs over the last two of a 5-3 defeat to Pittsburgh.

DeGrom is also doing his part at the plate, going 4 for 5 while getting at least one hit in each of his three starts. A shortstop at Stetson, he's accounted for half of New York's hits by pitchers.

The Mets may need him to go deep into this outing after fellow rookie Rafael Montero lasted 3 2-3 innings before seven relievers were used in a 6-5, 14-inning loss to the Phillies (24-28) on Friday.

New York had won the previous six meetings in Philadelphia, including a 4-1 victory in the opener of this series Thursday.

The Phillies will turn to Kyle Kendrick (1-5, 4.04), who may sympathize with deGrom's plight for a win. Kendrick is 8-8 with a 3.58 ERA vs the Mets in his career..

Kendrick scattered six hits in 6 2-3 innings of a 9-0 victory over Colorado on Monday, his first in 17 starts since beating the Chicago Cubs 9-8 on Aug. 6. Kendrick was 0-10 with a 5.11 ERA during his drought while receiving an average of 2.51 runs of support.

The right-hander gave up four runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 5-4 win at New York on May 10. He's won his last two home starts against the Mets, yielding four runs in 13 2-3 innings. David Wright sees RED when he meets Kendrick, He is batting .341 (15 for 44) with 3 big flies... Daniel Murphy is not hot vs Kendrick batting a mere .200 (6 for 30)...Lucas Duda also in the cold zone vs Kendrick (3 for 18) batting .167. Juan Lagares, who leads off is batting .600 (3 for 5) with a 2B...

Domonic Brown snapped out of his slump Friday, connecting for a three-run homer while adding another RBI. He had been 3 for 30 with one homer and two RBIs over his previous 10 games.

Mets can beat Kendrick, they just have to have the Wright kind of day...LGM!

The Mets (16-18) will be looking to even up the series against Kyle Kendrick, who is 8-8 with a 3.58 ERA vs the Mets in his career.

Kendrick (0-3, 3.58 ERA) takes the mound Saturday, which usually means the Phillies' offense will go quiet.

In his previous 13 starts dating back to last season, Philadelphia has backed Kendrick with 20 runs.

Kendrick hasn't earned a victory since beating the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 6.

Along with the lack of run support, the veteran right-hander has been plagued this season by allowing a lot of base runners. His WHIP of 1.41 is among the highest in the NL.

Against Toronto on Monday, Kendrick gave up seven hits, walked three and hit a batter in seven innings of a 3-0 loss. He was charged with all three runs -- his fourth straight start yielding three or less.

Kendrick has thrown the ball well versus the Mets since the start of the 2012 season, going 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA in five starts. David Wright, has seen the ball well from Kendrick. In 41 career AB's , he has 13 hits, two of them HR's.

Gee (3-1, 2.51) has been outstanding lately, tossing 16 consecutive scoreless innings and going 3-1 with a 0.67 ERA in his last four starts. He hasn't allowed a run since the fourth inning of a 3-0 loss to St. Louis on April 22.

In his last start, Gee permitted six hits in six shutout innings of a 5-1 win at Colorado on Sunday -- New York's last victory.

The Mets have since totaled five runs while batting .182 in losing four straight. They had their chances to get runners across the plate Friday, but they stranded 15 men on base and were 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

Curtis Granderson left six runners on base, and is batting .087 with 15 strikeouts in his last 12 games at Citi Field.

Gee didn't have much luck against the Phillies last season, going 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA in four starts. Ryan Howard owns Mr.Gee hitting  .467 (7 for15) with 6 HR's and 14 RBI's... Jimmy Rollins also has a blast when he see's Gee, he is batting .474 (9 for 19)...

If Gee continues to throw up ooo's and the Mets offense can click, the Mets will have a successful night. Easier said then done, LGM!
