Mets Minor League Roundup 9/3: Kingsport Eliminated from Playoffs, Cyclones woes continue with fifth straight loss

Mets Minor League Roundup 9/3:

RK - GREENEVILLE 7, KINGSPORT 3: One strike away from a first-round playoff victory, the K-Mets surrendered five runs in the top of the ninth and instead were eliminated in a winner-take-all Game 3 in the Western Division title series. Asked to protect a one-run lead, Ricky Jacquez and Robert Coles combined to allow the damage in the final frame. The K-Mets had taken a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth when Yeixon Ruiz walked and scored on Jeff McNeil's sacrifice fly. K-Mets starter Robert Whalen took a shutout bid and 2-0 lead into the seventh. He ultimately was charged with two runs, although the latter scored after he departed. Kingsport was making its first postseason appearance since 1996. Box

SS - TRI-CITY 6, BROOKLYN 3: The Cyclones' season-ending tailspin continued with a fifth straight loss. Brooklyn (37-37) will enter its season finale Wednesday needing a win to avoid the first losing season in the New York-Penn League team's 13-year history. Last week, John Gant tossed a one-hit complete game against Tri-City. This time, Gant surrendered six runs (five earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out two in two-plus innings. Trailing 2-0, the Cyclones evened the score in the second. James Roche and Matthew Oberste had consecutive one-out singles. Edward Rohan then produced an RBI single and Ismael Tijerina had a run-scoring groundout. But in the bottom half, Tri-City retook the lead. John Gant uncorked a two-out wild pitch with Jake Rodriguez on third base. The ValleyCats took control in the third. Tyler White singled and Conrad Gregor walked. Ronnie Mitchell then had a two-run triple to chase Gant. Cameron Griffin entered and surrendered a sacrifice fly. Oberste's seventh-inning solo homer completed the scoring. The Cyclones loaded the bases for Gavin Cecchini later in the frame, but Tri-City reliever Tyler Brunnemann retired him to end the threat. Griffin, Paul Paez and Ricky Knapp combined for six scoreless relief innings in the loss. Box

Mets Minor League Roundup 8/28:

AAA - COLORADO SPRINGS 4, LAS VEGAS 3 (8 innings)
LAS VEGAS 12, COLORADO SPRINGS 8: Right-hander Jacob deGrom departed Game 1 after two innings with an apparent injury. The 51s suffered a walk-off loss in the eighth as Justin Hampson suffered the defeat. Las Vegas had loaded the bases in the final regulation inning, but Mike Baxter flied out to end the threat. Ex-Met Xavier Nady had a two-run homer against deGrom before he departed. Dustin Lawley started in left field and went 1-for-4 in his Triple-A debut. Las Vegas then posted a seven-run fourth inning in Game 2 to earn a split. Jamie Hoffmann contributed a three-run homer and Kirk Nieuwenhuis had a two-run homer in the nightcap victory. Box 1, Box 2

AA - BINGHAMTON 7, BOWIE 4: Starter Mark Cohoon's outing ended after two scoreless innings because of a rain delay. Box

A+ - ST. LUCIE 2, CHARLOTTE 1 (10 innings): Rylan Sandoval's sacrifice fly scored Cam Maron in the bottom of the 10th for the walk-off win. Starter Hansel Robles allowed one run on three hits and three walks in eight innings. Randy Fontanez (9-7) earned the win with two no-hit relief innings. St. Lucie remains mathematically alive for a postseason berth with four games remaining, but faces near-impossible odds because the two teams ahead of the Mets in the division finish the season playing head-to-head. A - ROME 4, SAVANNAH 1: Starter Julian Hilario (7-7) allowed three runs on nine hits and and three walks in five innings. Box
