Mets News and Notes: Bay, Tejada, Cedeno, Harvey, Mejia, Cecchini, Plawecki

Some Mets News and Notes:

Jason Bay underwent an MRI and a second day of exams by doctors Tuesday as they try to gauge the extent of his most recent concussion.

Ruben Tejada (quadriceps) went 0-for-4 while playing a second straight full game at shortstop for Class A St. Lucie. Tejada is expected to move to Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday.

Ronny Cedeño made a fifth straight start for Buffalo on Tuesday, going 1-for-5 with an RBI. He is expected to be activated from the DL on Friday, for the Subway Series opener against the Yankees.

The returns of Tejada and Cedeño will set up interesting decisions for the Mets roster-wise. Quintanilla is out of options and must be exposed to waivers before being sent to Buffalo, and organization officials have been skeptical he would get through, perhaps preserving his spot. Valdespin, though, has started to pick up his play. (He is unlikely to start today against the southpaw Matusz.) Vinny Rottino also is on the 25-man roster.

Matt Harvey limited Norfolk to one run on six hits and two walks while striking out seven in six innings and Jenrry Mejia contributed two scoreless relief innings in his third appearance since a conversion to relief as Buffalo beat the Tides, 6-1. First-round picks Gavin Cecchini (0-for-3, two walks) with Kingsport and Kevin Plawecki (0-for-4, HBP) with Brooklyn made their pro debuts.

Mets News and Notes: Cecchini, Plawecki, Den Dekker, Bay

Mets News and Notes:

The Mets' top two picks are now signed. The team confirmed the signing of first-round pick Gavin Cecchini, a prep shortstop from Louisiana, last Friday for a reported $2.3 million.

Now, Jim Callis reports in Baseball America, the Mets' supplemental first-round pick (35th overall), also is on board. Purdue University catcher Kevin Plawecki signed for $1.4 million, according to the magazine. The commissioner's recommended amount for that slot was $1,467,400.

Center field prospect Matt den Dekker was named Eastern League Player of the Week and was promoted to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday. Den Dekker hit .340 with eight homers, 29 RBIs and 10 steals in 238 at-bats with Double-A Binghamton.

Mets Select (SS) Cecchini, (C) Plawecki in 2012 MLB Amateur Draft

The Mets, with the 12th overall pick in the draft, selected 18-year-old Louisiana high school shortstop Gavin Cecchini.

Besides Cecchini’s baseball pedigree — his brother, Garin, is a member of the Red Sox’ organization and his father is a high school baseball coach — the Mets could have drafted him for his loyalty: “There’s not a better place to play baseball than New York,” Cecchini said in a conference call. He also made it clear that the Mets were the only team he hoped would draft him.

The Mets would hope to find a place for Cecchini’s speed — perhaps his best trait as he stole 31 bases his senior season — and his glove, as prognosticators have speculated that Cecchini could move to second base if need be.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Cecchini, from Barbe High School in Louisiana, hit .413 with 7 homers and 32 runs batted in. As a junior, he was named a most valuable player at the 2011 Under Armour All-America game.

Here is a good video of Cecchini wearing #2 (What Else)
