Can the Mets Beat him?

Julio Teheran looks to continue his dominance of the Mets and beat them for the second time in less than a week while preventing the Atlanta Braves from losing their third straight.

Teheran (8-5, 2.29 ERA) owns an ERA and a 0.95 WHIP that rank among the lowest in the National League, and he's tied with Aaron Harang for the team lead in wins. That's reason enough for him to get the call as one of three Braves (49-40) named to the NL roster for next Tuesday's All-Star game in Minneapolis.

Tipping his cap during introductions will be the extent of his involvement, though, since he's scheduled to start Sunday against the Chicago Cubs.

The 23-year-old right-hander has looked every bit like an All-Star lately, compiling a 1.86 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 29 innings while going 2-1 in four starts. He's won his last two while allowing two earned runs and fanning 14 batters in 14 innings.

That includes a 3-1 win over New York on Wednesday, when Teheran yielded one run and four hits in seven innings to complete a three-game series sweep in Atlanta.

He's 2-0 with a 1.44 ERA in four career starts against the Mets, including three visits to Queens.

Atlanta may need another strong outing from Teheran after following a season-high nine-game winning streak with back-to-back defeats, including Monday's 4-3, 11-inning loss in the opener of this four-game set.

The Braves are 2 for 18 with runners in scoring position over the last two games, going 1 for 11 while stranding 11 runners against the Mets (40-49).

Freddie Freeman, who will join Teheran and closer Craig Kimbrel in Minneapolis, is looking to continue hitting the ball hard. The first baseman has a .391 average with 11 RBIs and 17 runs over the past 18 games after doubling on one of his three hits Monday.

He routinely pounds Mets pitching to the tune of a .325 career average. Freeman is hitting .429 with 18 RBIs over the past 16 meetings, including 16 for 30 in the past seven at Citi Field.

The Mets will again counter Teheran with rookie Jacob deGrom (1-5, 3.77), who allowed three runs in the first inning before tossing four scoreless and leaving with eight strikeouts in his first meeting with the Braves on Wednesday.

He's done that in each of his four starts at home, compiling a 2.49 ERA. However, deGrom is 0-3 over that stretch since he's been backed by five total runs.

The 2.56 run support average he's received on the season is the lowest for any Mets starter with at least five starts.

The Mets as a team are batting .176 vs Teheran. Both Lucas Duda and David Wright have a HR vs him. Eric Young Jr. is leading the Mets in AVG vs Teheran batting .444 (4 for 9).

Preview: Game 85
New York Mets (37-47) at Atlanta Braves (46-38)

The Atlanta Braves (46-38) longest winning streak of the season began last week when Julio Teheran delivered his latest solid outing.

With Teheran facing the slumping New York Mets on Wednesday night, the Braves seem primed to extend their run to seven consecutive victories while dealing their NL East rivals a fourth straight defeat.

Teheran (7-5, 2.34 ERA) was terrific for the third straight start in Friday's 4-2 win over Philadelphia, giving up two runs -- one earned -- and striking out nine in seven innings to help Atlanta (46-38) begin its streak.

The right-hander has struck out 25 while walking two over 25 innings during a hot stretch in which he's gone 1-1 with a 2.05 ERA. He ranks among the NL's best in ERA and is making a case to be selected for this month's All-Star Game.

Teheran is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in three career starts against the Mets (37-47), who have lost six of seven after falling 5-4 Tuesday. Atlanta will be going for the sweep after tying its season high with three stolen bases that led to a pair of runs.

Catcher Christian Bethancourt registered his first career RBI with a second-inning single. Bethancourt started his second straight game and is expected to share time with Laird after Evan Gattis, hitting .290 and tied for the team lead with 16 homers, was placed on the disabled list earlier Tuesday with a bulging disc in his back.

Freddie Freeman, who is hitting .411 in his last 14 against the Mets, tied the game with an RBI double in the third. The Braves went 3 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

The Mets are 1-5 on a trip that ends with this contest before they begin a 10-game homestand Friday that includes a four-game set with the Braves starting Monday.

Curtis Granderson and Daniel Murphy each hit a two-run homer in Tuesday's loss. Ruben Tejada is batting .351 during a 10-game hitting streak, improving his average 29 points to .247 in that stretch.

New York will look to end its skid with help from Jacob deGrom, who has been inconsistent since his call-up from Triple-A on May 15.

DeGrom (1-4, 3.62) had a 1.83 ERA through his first three starts, then posted a 6.75 mark in his next four. The rookie has been better over the last two, giving up five hits in seven innings of a 4-0 win over Miami for his first major league victory June 21 before allowing two runs in 6 2/3 innings of a 3-2, 11-inning loss to Pittsburgh on Friday.

The right-hander will make his first career start against Atlanta, which has won four of the last five meetings.
