Preview:

Yasiel Puig is on a tear, and that could go a long way toward maintaining the Los Angeles Dodgers' dominance of the New York Mets.

With Puig seeking another big offensive display and Ryu who is slated to return from the disabled list to try and continue his dominance on the road Wednesday night against the sputtering Mets.

Puig has a .411 average with six homers and 22 RBIs in 18 games, managing at least one hit in all but one of those contests. He had three with a double and an RBI while reaching base five times in Tuesday's 9-4 win to open this series at Citi Field.

The right fielder has gone 6 for 14 with two doubles and four runs over his last three meetings with the Mets (20-24), and that's helped the Dodgers (24-22) to a 10-1 mark in the last 11 matchups.

They're expected to turn to Ryu (3-2, 3.00 ERA) as they try for their first six-game winning streak over New York since 1996.

The left-hander, though, allowed six runs in five innings of a 6-1 loss to Colorado in his last outing April 27. Ryu has been sidelined with shoulder inflammation, but he's not anticipating any limitations during his return.

Ryu has certainly done that on the road, tossing 26 consecutive scoreless innings while going 3-0 through his first four starts. It's the longest road shutout streak to start a season by a Dodger since 1974.

He's yielded one run in seven innings in both of his career starts against the Mets, going 1-0.

New York, a season-worst four games under .500, has batted .207 while dropping five of six games. However, the Mets racked up 11 hits Tuesday, with Curtis Granderson coming within a triple of the cycle and Lucas Duda adding a two-run homer.

Granderson was 1 for 14 over the previous four games, while Duda has a .177 average at home.

A rare recent bright spot for the Mets was the major league debut of Jacob deGrom, who is getting at least one more turn in the rotation with Dillon Gee on the DL due to a strained right lat muscle.

DeGrom was a hard-luck loser in a 1-0 defeat to the New York Yankees on Thursday, yielding one run and four hits in seven innings.

The right-hander also had one of the Mets' three singles Thursday, and he remains their only pitcher to get a hit in 72 at-bats this season.

What's on Deck - Dodgers at Mets (3 Game Series) - Pitching Matchups - Dodgers News and Notes

What's on Deck - Mets at Dodgers (3 Game Series)

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (23-22) at NEW YORK METS (20-23)

Pitching matchups:

Tuesday: RHP Josh Beckett (1-1, 2.38) VS. RHP Rafael Montero (0-1, 4.50), 7:10 p.m. ET

Wednesday:  LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-2, 3.00) VS. RHP Jacob deGrom (0-1, 1.29) , 7:10 p.m. ET

Thursday: RHP Zack Greinke (7-1, 2.03) VS. LHP Jon Niese (2-3, 2.54), 7:10 p.m. ET

Dodgers News and Notes:

The Mets will have Rafael Montero going for his first win and his second start of the season. Jacob deGrom will pitch in the second game and will hopefully have a better offensive showing than last time as he lost 1-0 in his first MLB game. And Jon Niese will pitch the finale, who imploded a little bit in his last start going only 4 innings, giving up 8 hits, 3 runs and will look to bounce back.

Josh Beckett on Tuesday earned his first win since Sept. 30, 2012. He had been 0-6 in 14 starts. Beckett did not pitch after mid-May last season and ultimately underwent surgery to remove a rib. That procedure attempted to alleviate thoracic outlet syndrome -- a pinched nerve affecting his right arm. For the season, the 34-year-old Beckett leads the L.A. rotation in WHIP (1.056) and hits per nine innings (6.3). Beckett is throwing his fastball a career-low 35.5 percent of the time. He now throws a curveball a career-high 30.1 percent.

Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched a four-inning simulated game Friday and will reenter the rotation Wednesday, officially pushing originally listed starter Paul Maholm to the bullpen. That also could push reliever Chris Withrow to the minors despite a 2.77 ERA, because Withrow is not out of options. Ryu landed on the DL with left-shoulder inflammation.

Maholm (1-4, 5.40 ERA) enters the series off a start against the Miami Marlins in which he allowed 10 runs (five earned) on 11 hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings. Reed Johnson homered against him on a 62 mph curveball, the slowest pitch resulting in a long ball in the majors since Jose Bautista sent a 61.7 mph offering also from Maholm over the outfield wall on May 28, 2013, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Maholm made three relief appearances in March/April, including during the club’s season-opening trip to Australia.
