Mets News and Notes: Santana, Hefner, Francisco, Cut 3, Wright, Mejia, Collins on Tejada

Mets News and Notes:

Johan Santana did not join teammates for the morning workout before Saturday's game against the Houston Astros.

Sandy Alderson said Terry Collins may address the issue postgame. A team insider said there was no major setback, but thought Santana might be slowed.

Jeremy Hefner starts against the Astros, and it's not a leap to expect he likely will open the season in the rotation, with Santana on the DL.

The Mets had targeted Thursday for Santana's first Grapefruit League action.

Frank Francisco (elbow inflammation) said he now expects to throw off a mound for the first time in spring training on Sunday.

Travis d'Arnaud, who was struck below the right elbow with a pitch Friday, participated in the full morning workout and said he was fine.

The Mets have made their first cuts of spring training, dispatching right-handers Cory Mazzoni and Rafael Montero and catcher Juan Centeno to minor league camp.

Mazzoni, a second-round pick in 2011 from NC State, started the Grapefruit League season quickly with five scoreless innings over his first two appearances. Overall, he finished with a 3.38 ERA in eight innings.

Montero, who split last season in Class A between Savannah and St. Lucie, made two appearances spanning four innings. He had a 4.50 ERA and allowed six hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Centeno was 0-for-1. He appeared in two Grapefruit League games.

Mets invite five to Spring Training

The Mets on Monday announced they have invited catcher Juan Centeno, infielder Josh Satin, outfielder Matt den Dekker and right-handed pitchers Rafael Montero and Cory Mazzoni to Major League Spring Training.

Montero, 22, notched an 11-5 record with a 2.36 ERA in his 20 starts for Class A Savannah of the South Atlantic League and Class A St. Lucie of the Florida State League. The 6-foot-2, 168-pound native of the Dominican Republic went 6-3 with a 2.52 ERA (20 earned runs in 71 1/3 innings) in 12 starts for the Sand Gnats and 5-2 with a 2.13 ERA (12 earned runs in 50 2/3 innings) for the St. Lucie club. The Mets signed the right-hander, ranked as the team's No. 11 prospect by MLB.com, as a non-drafted free agent in 2011.

Mazzoni, 23, played for St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton of the Eastern League last season. He combined for 26 starts and had a 10-6 record with a 3.93 ERA. The right-hander, selected by the Mets in the second round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, is ranked as the team's No. 15 prospect by MLB.com.
