Mets News and Notes: Marcum Out for Season, Harvey to Miss Start?, Lyon released

Mets News and Notes:

New York Mets right-hander Shaun Marcum will undergo surgery next Monday in St. Louis to address numbness and coldness in his pitching hand and will miss the remainder of the season, assistant general manager John Ricco said Tuesday.

Manager Terry Collins said right-hander Carlos Torres will move into Marcum's rotation spot, at least until left-hander Jonathon Niese returns from the disabled list.

Torres may start Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates in place of Matt Harvey. The decision is unresolved, Collins said.

Harvey has been dealing with a blister, although Collins said Harvey reported improvement Tuesday. Another motivation for potentially skipping Harvey on Saturday is that the Mets are looking for ways to limit his innings count without shutting him down at the end of the season.

Four days after being designated for assignment, Brandon Lyon has been placed on release waivers by the Mets. Assuming unclaimed, Lyon will become a free agent.

Lyon, 33, was 2-2 with a 4.98 ERA in 37 relief appearances.

Mets News: RHP Gonzalez Germen demoted, 1B Ike Davis officially promoted

Mets News:

The Mets have demoted right-handed reliever Gonzalez Germen to complete Thursday's roster moves that included the promotions of Ike Davis and Greg Burke and Brandon Lyon getting designated for assignment.

Gonzalez went unused in his lone series with the ballclub.

Mets News: Mets DFA Brandon Lyon, Recall Greg Burke

Mets News:

The Mets have designated right-handed reliever Brandon Lyon for assignment, according to the team's official Twitter feed.

New York will recall fellow righty Greg Burke to take Lyon's roster spot, the team further tweets.

After a solid 2012 season in which he put up a 3.10 ERA, 9.3 K/9, and 3.0 BB/9 over 61 innings for the Astros and Blue Jays, Lyon signed on with the Mets for 2013.

He is currently sporting a 4.91 ERA in 33 innings thrown, though he was sitting at 3.16 earned per nine before the Nats came into town. Lyon has, however, failed to match last year's strikeout to walk ratio: he has registered 6.3 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 to date.

Good News: Mets agree to terms with Brandon Lyon

The Mets completed their offseason bullpen makeover on Thursday, agreeing to terms with right-hander Brandon Lyon on a one-year contract, according to a source. The team has yet to announce the deal, which is pending a physical.

Lyon, 33, posted a 3.10 ERA in 67 appearances split between the Astros and Blue Jays last season, striking out 63 and walking 20 in 61 innings. He was the primary closer for the D-backs in 2008 and the Astros from 2010-11, before surgery to his right shoulder and biceps tendon derailed his career in '11.

With the Mets, Lyon figures to slide into a setup role alongside Bobby Parnell, though he could also step in as at least a part-time closer. Manager Terry Collins told the New York Post on Wednesday that the ninth-inning job still belongs to Frank Francisco, but general manager Sandy Alderson was not nearly so strong in his words earlier this week.

"I think a lot will depend on what we see over the course of February and March," the GM said.

Mets Bullpen: Mets to sign reliever Brandon Lyon

The New York Mets were closing in on a deal with right-hander Brandon Lyon on Sunday, a major league source told ESPNNewYork.com.

Lyon would become the latest in a flurry of late signings to bolster the team's bullpen.

The Mets also recently have added veteran right-handers Scott Atchison and LaTroy Hawkins and left-hander Pedro Feliciano to minor league contracts.

Lyon, 33, went a combined 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 67 relief appearances last season with the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays.

Lyon will also provide some insurance for Frank Francisco, who has closer experience...
