Mets Rumors: No Drew, But Mets Look at other Trade Options at Shortstop

Mets Rumors:

The Mets who watched Stephen Drew land in Boston again, did not want to shell out the money for his services nor give up another draft pick in the upcoming amateur draft.

The Mets can stay with the plan of keeping Ruben Tejada/Wilmer Flores at shortstop this season and look to sign a shortstop in off-season. The 2015 free agent class features prominent names such as Hanley Ramirez, J.J. Hardy, Asdrubal Cabrera and Jed Lowrie, but Martino points out that the team would rather go in the trade direction for a young controllable shortstop instead.

The Mets have been linked in the off-season with the Mariners about Brad Miller and Nick Franklin, but sources say talks have not been active of late.

The other option includes Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius, who has been playing in Triple-A. Gregorius is batting .303 with a .390 OBP for Reno... The Mets are continually monitoring him, but the front office shakeup in Arizona makes trading with them a bit confusing at this time. Martino writes that other teams at this point aren't even sure whether to contact GM Kevin Towers or new Chief Baseball Officer Tony La Russa regarding trades, who Mets GM Sandy Alderson has a good relationship with both.

The Mets will have to depart with one of their young pitching prospects on the rise. Rafael Montero, Jacob deGrom could become valuable trade chips down the road. The Diamondbacks who asked the Mets for Pitching Prospect Noah Syndergaard and Catching Prospect Kevin Plawecki for Gregorius, but the Mets rebuffed at the demand.

The Mets rotation in 2015 will be crowded, They will have mended Matt Harvey back and also have Jon Niese, Dillon Gee, Zack Wheeler, Rafael Montero, Jacob deGrom, and also Noah Syndergaard, who is scheduled to make his 2014 debut late this summer. So they have young arms to trade to obtain a quality shortstop, just a matter of which one makes sense for the organization..

Mets Rumors: Mariners expected to trade one of their shortstops

Franklin

Mets Rumors:

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN NY,  the Mariners are likely to trade one of their shortstops Nick Franklin or Brad Miller before Opening Day.  Rubin says Franklin could be more expendable at this point.

Franklin, who turns 23 on March 2, hit .225 with 12 homers, 45 RBIs and six steals in 369 at-bats as a rookie last season while appearing in 96 games at second base and three games at shortstop.

He now has lost his second base job in Seattle with the signing of  Superstar Robinson Cano.

Miller who is 24, had success last season as a rookie shortstop (.265, 8 HR, 36 RBIs in 306 at-bats).

"Shortstop's really my natural position," Franklin told the Seattle Times. "Being at second was a little outside of it. The big thing with me, I grew up playing shortstop my whole life. It's nothing new to me."
