Mets intensify search for relief help, Frank Francisco is their top target?

Francisco close to being a Met?
Andy Martino of the New York Daily News is reporting that the Mets are intensifying their search for relief help. In fact, Martino hears that they could make a deal as soon as tonight.

A high-ranking front office insider identified Frank Francisco as a top target, along with Jon Rauch and Brad Lidge.

The Mets met on Tuesday with Rex Gary, who represents Rauch and Lidge. A person in the room during those talks indicated that neither player was close to signing. “Hard to say,” the source said about Rauch and Lidge’s chances of becoming Mets.

“I’d be surprised if we throw all of our money at one guy,” Alderson said. “Our bullpen is such that we definitely need somebody at the end. We can use more depth in our pen also. I think if we can do it, it probably would be better to be a little bit conservative with our top-end guy and still have some money to provide depth.
Francisco, had 17 saves and a 3.55 ERA for Toronto in 2009. He was also involved in a 2004 incident that involved Francisco throwing a folding chair into he stands during an altercation with fans. He was arrested and sentenced to anger management training.

New York’s bullpen was 28th in the majors last season with a 4.33 ERA. While Bobby Parnell was given a chance to audition for the closer role following the trade of K-Rod, his six blown saves in 12 chances during the second half of the season has caused the Mets to look outside the organization for an alternative.

Rumor Mill: Rauch, Lidge, Bailey, Hudson

Here are some of the late Mets Rumors from last night:
  • Free agent relievers Jon Rauch and Brad Lidge are “strong” on the Mets’ radar, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post (on Twitter).
  • The Mets inquired on Andrew Bailey, but they don’t seem to be willing to meet Oakland’s asking price, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). The Rangers, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Mariners and Reds are also interested in the former AL Rookie of the Year.
  • Though previous Mets administrations liked Orlando Hudson and he’s now “very available,” the Mets aren’t currently interested, according to Sherman (Twitter link). The Padres owe Hudson $5.5MM in 2012 and the team has an $8MM option for 2013 ($2MM buyout).
