Mets Rumors: Mets Cooled on Fernando Rodney?

Mets Rumors:

Alderson likewise said that New York was not enamored with the possibility of giving out a big league deal for a free agent reliever. New York has recently been linked with closer Fernando Rodney and reportedly made a legitimate run at Grant Balfour before he signed with the Rays.

"Acquiring someone with some experience would give us some comfort going into Spring Training, but we don't want to preclude some of our younger pitchers from getting a solid opportunity either," Alderson explained. "So if there's somebody there that we like, we'll pursue them. Otherwise, one of the ways we've approached starting pitching, for example, is to bring in a couple of guys on minor league contracts and have them compete with some of our own internal candidates. We may do the same thing with the bullpen."

Andy Martino of the New York Daily News writes that it makes little sense for Fernando Rodney to go to the Mets.

Team insiders tell Martino that Bobby Parnell has been assured the ninth inning is his, so Rodney would likely only pitch as the closer in the event of a setback in Parnell's recovery or further injury.

Mets Trying to Trade Ike Davis?

The Mets are being aggressive at the Winter Meetings, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post, talking about everyone except David Wright.  Sherman says the Mets are talking with suitors seriously about Ike Davis, whom the Mets insist is fully healthy.  The Rangers are known to like Davis, he adds.  Davis, 24, missed most of the season with an ankle injury.

A high-ranking Mets official told Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reports of them being serious about trading Davis are not true.

Obviously the Mets are seeing what the market is for their players (except Wright). If a trade makes sense for the Mets and they can get better quick they will pull the trigger. I don't think the Mets would be stupid enough to trade Ike Davis, but could see what they can get for him..

I would love to see the Mets try and land Boston's SS Jed Lowrie and they can lead him off!

Mets wait for pitchers market to open, Eye Garcia as possible arm

According to Andy Martino of  the NY Daily News, The Mets continue to monitor the market for free agent starting pitchers, waiting for the asking prices for Chris Young and other low-risk, high-reward possibilities to drop.

According to a source close to Martino, they have also expressed preliminary interest in Freddy Garcia, although talks so far have been limited.

Garcia, 34, has intrigued the Mets, Yankees and White Sox, among other teams, and is seeking less than the $5 million guaranteed that the Los Angeles Dodgers gave Jon Garland this winter.

He is, however, believed to be looking for a raise from the $1 million guaranteed he earned last season, when he went 12-6, with a 4.64 ERA with the White Sox. Garcia is not close to signing with any team.
