Mets Rumors: Mets players to lose 40 man roster spots

Mets Rumors:

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN NY,  several Mets players will lose their 40-man roster spots early this offseason.

Because the Mets only have eight free agents, the 40-man roster will be full once the players are activated from the 60-day DL no later than five days after the World Series. (The free agents are David Aardsma, Tim Byrdak, Pedro Feliciano, Frank Francisco, Aaron Harang, LaTroy Hawkins, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Santana.)

That would leave players vulnerable like Jordany Valdespin, Scott Atchison, Greg Burke, Robert Carson, Sean Henn, Zach Lutz, Mike Baxter, Andrew Brown and Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

Last November, the Mets added six prospects to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. The previous year they added seven.

Prospects are added to the 40-man roster by Nov. 20 to shield them from the Rule 5 draft, so no later than then is when the first wave of subtractions should be fully clear.

Mets add four to 40 man roster

The day before the midnight deadline to protect players for the Rule 5 draft, the Mets added four players to their 40-man roster: RHP John Stinson, RHP Armando Rodriguez, 3B Zach Lutz, IF Jordany Valdespin. The roster now stands at 37.

Stinson, 22, posted a 4.24 ERA at Class A Port St. Lucie last season. In Double A, he allowed eight runs in four starts. Rodriguez, 22, went 8-9 with a 3.08 ERA in 27 starts with Class-A Savannah.

Lutz, 24, compiled a .967 OPS in Double A, hitting 17 homers in 61 games. Valdespin, a 22-year-old who just returned from a stint in the Arizona Fall League, hit .272 with a .300 OBP in Class A and Double A last season.

Alderson cutting the fat off the Mets roster, 40 Man Roster down to 34

New Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has spent his first week on the job tending to various administrative matters, and on Thursday, he pared the team's 40-man roster down to 34 players.

The Mets announced that the Royals have claimed infielder Joaquin Arias off waivers, ending his brief stint with New York. Arias, 26, was 6-for-30 after the Mets acquired him from the Rangers for outfielder Jeff Francoeur in September.

The Mets also outrighted right-hander Eddie Kunz, lefty Raul Valdes, third baseman Mike Hessman, outfielder Jesus Feliciano and catcher Omir Santos to Triple-A Buffalo, removing them from the 40-man roster. All but Kunz spent time on the active roster last season.
