Mets News: David Wright and Eric Young Jr. are Finalist for 2013 NL Gold Glove Awards

Mets News:

The Mets have two players named finalists for 2013 NL Gold Glove awards. Third baseman David Wright was one of the three finalists at his position in the National League and Eric Young Jr. was named a finalist for left field.

The winners of the awards for the best fielders at each position will be announced on ESPN2 Tuesday night.

Nolan Arenado of the Rockies and Juan Uribe of the Dodgers were also finalists at third base. Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies and the Pirates’ Starling Marte are also finalists for left field.

Surprisingly, Mets Center fielder Juan Lagares did not get the call as one of the finalist. Lagares, 24, impressed with his fielding in the outfield this season. He set a franchise rookie record for outfield assists with 15 and was credited with 26 defensive runs saved this year, ranking him sixth among qualifying major leaguers. The Royals’ Alex Gordon and the Diamondbacks Gerardo Parra led MLB with 17 assists in 155 games played.

If your wondering, David Wright has won the award twice in 2007 and 2008. The Mets’ captain had a .973 fielding percentage with 86 putouts, and 235 assists and he was charged with nine errors this season in 111 starts at third base. He missed nearly two months with a hamstring injury.

Eric Young Jr., who led the NL with 46 stolen bases this season, played 88 games in left field, committing just two errors. He had seven assists. “It’s an honor and a privilege to be nominated for the Gold Glove.” he said.
