Mets Top Pick Gavin Cecchini Fractures Finger

Shortstop Gavin Cecchini, the Mets' top pick (12th overall) in last month's draft out of high school in Louisiana, suffered a "small fracture" to the tip of his middle finger after getting hit by a pitch Wednesday, according to Paul DePodesta.

"I'm not one to estimate recovery time. Fortunately, he's already had a pretty full year," DePodesta added.

Cecchini had been hitting .250 with one homer, 13 RBIs and two steals with 13 walks and 26 strikeouts in 132 plate appearances with Kingsport.

Mets News and Notes: Relief, Dykstra, Francisco, Bay, Gee, Dickey, Draft

Mets News and Notes:

The Mets will sign 39-year-old left-hander C.J. Nitkowski to a minor league deal and assign him to Double-A Binghamton.

Lenny Dykstra pleaded guilty Friday in Los Angeles to bankruptcy fraud, concealment of assets and money laundering. He faces up 20 years in prison at a Dec. 3 sentencing.

Frank Francisco's return is on hold after the closer was shut down with continued oblique discomfort. Jason Bay, meanwhile, went 0-for-3 with a walk for the second straight day with Class A St. Lucie, this time as the DH. Terry Collins indicated Bay quickly would move to Triple-A Buffalo, paving the way for him to potentially be activated for next week's series in Washington.

Mets Select (SS) Cecchini, (C) Plawecki in 2012 MLB Amateur Draft

The Mets, with the 12th overall pick in the draft, selected 18-year-old Louisiana high school shortstop Gavin Cecchini.

Besides Cecchini’s baseball pedigree — his brother, Garin, is a member of the Red Sox’ organization and his father is a high school baseball coach — the Mets could have drafted him for his loyalty: “There’s not a better place to play baseball than New York,” Cecchini said in a conference call. He also made it clear that the Mets were the only team he hoped would draft him.

The Mets would hope to find a place for Cecchini’s speed — perhaps his best trait as he stole 31 bases his senior season — and his glove, as prognosticators have speculated that Cecchini could move to second base if need be.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Cecchini, from Barbe High School in Louisiana, hit .413 with 7 homers and 32 runs batted in. As a junior, he was named a most valuable player at the 2011 Under Armour All-America game.

Here is a good video of Cecchini wearing #2 (What Else)

If Mets Lose Jose Reyes to Marlins, they will get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds plus the Marlins' third-round pick

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN NY, If the Mets lose Reyes to Miami they will get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds created from thin air, plus the Marlins' third-round pick, according to a Major League Baseball official.

Under the old and new systems, Miami's first-round pick is protected, because it is ninth overall. So the Mets and other clubs won't cash in on that..

In Addition, the teams that lose New Type A players as free agents, assuming arbitration had been offered, will get basically the same type of compensation they would under the old system. But the pick will not come from the signing team.

So, for instance, the Marlins are signing Bell. Under the old system, San Diego would get a pick between the first and second rounds created out of thin air, plus Miami's second-round pick (ninth in that round). Under the new agreement, the Padres instead get two picks created from thin air -- the sandwich pick between the first and second rounds, plus pick 9a in the second round, immediately before the Marlins select.
