Doug Davis Threw For Eight Teams

Jesse Sanchez of reports that free agent left-hander Doug Davis threw a 45-pitch bullpen session yesterday and was scouted by eight teams, including the Mets, Rangers, Angels, Rockies, and Orioles.

Davis made just eight starts last season because of a heart problem and an elbow injury that required surgery, going 1-4 with a 7.51 ERA, but the 35-year-old southpaw had a 4.12 ERA in 203 innings for the

Diamondbacks in 2009 and previously posted an ERA in the 3.00s or 4.00s every year since 2004.
He’ll likely have to settle for a minor-league deal at this point, but Davis could be an interesting low-risk flier for teams in need of some rotation depth.

Update: Castillo signs with the Phillies

On the day he officially was eligible to sign, Castillo quickly narrowed his focus and appears poised to join the Philadelphia Phillies, according to ESPN NY.

The Phillies’ second base situation is unsettled because of All-Star Chase Utley’s knee woes.

Castillo, 35, hit .235 with no homers and 17 RBIs last season in 247 at-bats. The Mets began the process of releasing Castillo on Friday, despite owing him $6 million in the final season of a four-year, $25 million deal. Castillo’s new employer will only be responsible for the major league minimum.

Update: The Philadelphia Phillies, obviously concerned about Chase Utley’s knee problem, have signed former Mets second baseman Luis Castillo to a minor league contract, according to

Utley is battling patellar tendinitis and told reporters on Sunday he is “moving in the right direction.” But the Phillies, hedging their bets on a quick return by their star, decided to add Castillo. Utley has not played in a spring training game.

According to ESPN, Mets G.M. Sandy Alderson was not shocked by the signing, telling reporters, “It wasn’t a surprise. It wasn’t unanticipated.”
