Mets Rumors: Mets Will Try To Fill Their Voids At Winter Meetings

The New York Mets will enter the GM Winter Meetings looking to fill their team with voids left from trading players last season. The Mets will look to add to their bullpen, outfield/first base, and infield either at second base or third base.

The Mets so far this off-season have lost out on trying to acquire names like Dee Gordon, Mike Minor, Shohei Ohtani. So they can take them off their holiday shopping list.

The Mets seem to be looking to bolster their pen which could help their starters pitch shorter games and keep them healthier than they were in the past. New manager Mickey Callaway could have an impact on which relievers will look to acquire as they try to pluck some names from last years Cleveland roster in Bryan Shaw and Joe Smith. But the search will not end there as they can reunite with reliever Addison Reed or go in a totally different direction with names out there like Brandon Morrow and Luke Gregerson on the free agent market.

The first base situation is a sticky one. The Mets already have a prospect in Dominic Smith, but the teams brass was not impressed in his audition with the club last season. The Mets know he can be a good player, but he has to show he can do it at the Major League level. The Mets could look to add insurance to Smith by adding a versatile player that can play both first base and the outfield. Jay Bruce proved this last season before being traded that he could be that player, but the Mets could look to someone who will not command such a large paycheck. The Mets could have eyes on a player like Adam Lind or Mitch Moreland to fit the bill. Carlos Santana could also be on the radar and the Mets view him as a difference maker and would command his value in years, so the Mets would certainly have to trade Smith for other needs to the team.

Besides the first base situation, the Mets want to upgrade at second base or third base and have a lot of trade options to get it done. The Mets have kept tabs on players like the Tigers Ian Kinsler, Indians Jason Kipnis, Phillies Cesar Hernandez, and even the Pirates Josh Harrison. The Mets could also match up with the new arrival of the Marlins Starlin Castro, who was just traded in the Giancarlo Stanton deal with the Yankees. Backup plans could have the Mets reunite with free agent Neil Walker, who was traded to the Brewers last season. Kinsler could be the easiest to acquire out of the group when referring to trades because he will be a free agent after the 2018 season.  Kipnis is an intriguing option as he lost his starting job with the emergence of Jose Ramirez at second base. Harrison, a gamer for the Pirates is someone that the Mets could acquire because the Mets could dangle pitching that the Pirates could want such as Steven Matz, Zack Wheeler, Seth Lugo, or Robert Gsellman. The Mets have said that the only two untouchable starting pitchers remain are Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom.

Of course, nothing is written in stone because rumors have been floated out there about particular players. The Mets could go in a different direction altogether. The Mets could shock the Mets universe by signing a first baseman like Eric Hosmer and even an outfielder like Lorenzo Cain. Remember this is the entertainment business and the Mets have to sell tickets. Especially after the Yankees acquiring Giancarlo Stanton and taking the city by storm.

Happy Holidays to everyone and hopefully the Mets can get us some presents to get us excited about!
