Mets Rumors: Mets Will Use Free Agent Market To Bolster Club, Maybe Trade On Horizon???

The New York Mets enter the off-season with plenty holes to fill for 2018. The Mets are without the power they traded away and GM Sandy Alderson has said they would like to spend roughly around $30-40 million to fill all their needs. Is this really all the Mets have to spend? We will have to see if this is a reality.

The Mets are in a position to reek havoc on the free agent market. Names like J.D. Martinez, Mike Moustakas might be a pipe dream for Mets fans, but the Mets could look to other avenues to get the job done. Names have been floated around such as a reunion with Jay Bruce or centerfielder Lorenzo Cain, who is also a free agent. I think Cain could help the Mets as they look to stabilize their outfield, especially in center field. Michael Conforto when he returns from injury can slot over to right field, which is his natural position.  Free agent infielders the Mets could chase are Eduardo Nunez, Howie Kendrick, or Zack Cozart, according to reports.

Marlins' second basemen Dee Gordon has been mentioned available on the trade market. The Mets could use him at second base to replace Neil Walker, who they traded away. This would give them much-needed speed at the top of the lineup and stability at second base. Would the Mets trade within the division and give up a prospect like maybe Dominic Smith or a starter such as Steven Matz to get the deal done? This is something that can possibly get done, but I don't see it happening.

Another rumor that has been floated around is trading for Blue Jays' third basemen Josh Donaldson, who would be a big splash in New York City. This would give them stability and power back at third base and also the Mets would not have to look over their shoulder when and if David Wright is coming back from multiple injuries. The Mets would have to deal 3 Top 10 prospects and/or an established pitcher for Donaldson. Maybe the Mets could get aggressive and deal Wilmer Flores and Steven Matz in a package to get the deal done. This is something that would make the fanbase go crazy and show the Mets mean business here.

The Mets are looking to add another piece to their overused bullpen in 2017. The Mets opted to resigned Jerry Blevins which was a no-brainer given he was one of the bright spots to their pen in 2017. The Mets could look to a reunion with Addison Reed, who is a free agent. Bullpens are a crap shoot and given what Sandy Alderson has done in the past, he usually sits back and waits for the market to develop and picks up pitchers for one or two years. So I can't really speculate on this issue, there are a lot of names to chose from. The Mets got AJ Ramos from the Marlins in unexpected trade which will help them, but they need more.

On the starting pitching front, the Mets will look to add a starter that can eat innings. The Mets had Bartolo Colon who did this for them in the past. The Mets will look to add a free agent like Jason Vargas or Lance Lynn who has been rumored on the Mets radar.

Some other rumors worth noting, the idea of signing first basemen Eric Hosmer is a great idea and a costly one, but the Mets have prospect Dominic Smith who is expected to fill the position. If the Mets do sign Hosmer, then you can expect the Mets to package Smith for other needs. But I can't buy into the idea just yet. That's why we love the rumor mills....

Expect more rumors to float around between  November 13th and 16th when the MLB General Manager Meetings take place in Orlando Florida.

Lets Go Mets! Get back On Track!
