Mets Rumors: Cain, Otani, Santana, Bullpen help

The New York Mets enter the free agent market with a lot of holes to fill. Their primary positions in the market seem to be so far in the outfield and first base. The Mets are looking to sure up the defense and add some offense to the team after trading most of their spare parts last year.

The Mets according to reports could look to trade for second basemen or go after a third baseman either through free agency or trade. This would allow them to shift Asdrubal Cabrera to where he is needed. Teams have approached the Mets on some of their controllable arms such as Steven Matz, Seth Lugo, and Robert Gsellman. Rumors have been floating around the Mets that they can be looking to trade with the Indians for Jason Kipnis, who is expendable for the Indians. The Mets could also look at the possibilities for trading for Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler or the Twins 2B Brian Dozier.

The Mets with a need of a centerfielder have shown interest in free agent outfielder Lorenzo Cain. Cain could provide them with a leadoff hitter that can steal bases and provide them with some defense as well. The Blue Jays also have been in preliminary talks for his services.

The Mets also have shown interest in 23-year-old Japanese Star Shohei Otani, who has been labeled as the "Japanese Babe Ruth" as he can pitch as well play the outfield. He also has been known to reach the 100 MPH mark with his fastball. The problem with the Mets getting into a serious play for the Japanese star is that the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees have more international pool money than them since the Mets have already spent most of theirs on recent signings. So this could be a longshot for them, but it's good that they are trying to lore the young star. The positive thing the Mets have on their side is they have a good relationship with his agents at CAA. As Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Yoenis Cespedes are all represented by the same firm.

The Mets look to replace the power at first base they lost from trading Lucas Duda last season. The Mets apparently have an interest in signing Carlos Santana, who played for the Indians last season and new manager Mickey Callaway knows so well. Santana, a switch-hitter could provide them with some pop in the middle of the lineup and probably won't be getting the serious amount of cash that Eric Hosmer might command. Also, the Mets could look to trade their prospect Dominic Smith for other needs as he did not impress the Mets last year in September. The Mets also have concerns about Smith's conditioning and weight control.  Santana, according to reports is being sought after by 10 MLB clubs so far including the Angels, and Phillies, so the Mets will have competition for his services.

The Mets also seem to be interested insuring up the bullpen with new manager Mickey Callaway and new pitching coach Dave Eiland on board. NY Post's Joel Sherman points out that Callaway could look to pluck some of his old disciples who are free agents like Joe Smith, Bryan Shaw, and Boone Logan and Eiland has worked with free agent Mike Minor, who was in Kansas City.  The Mets could also be bidders for the services of Addison Reed and Brandon Morrow.

More to come as the Hot Stove heats up...
