Mets News: Mets Narrow Search For New Manager

The New York Mets continue their search for their next manager. Multiple reports say the Mets have narrowed their choices down to 5 or 6 candidates.

The Mets have started their first round of choices and have interviewed their hitting coach Kevin Long for the new position and intend on interviewing Alex Cora ( Astros Coach) Tuesday, along with other candidates on Wednesday such as Mickey Callaway (Indians Pitching Coach), Joe McEwing (White Sox Bench Coach), and Manny Acta (Mariners Third Base Coach).'

The Mets have reached out to former Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus, but he declined to the offer. Instead, he is considered to be the next Red Sox manager.  Former Mets Third Basemen Robin Ventura, who was considered a candidate has shown no interest being interviewed for the job.

The others in the field that were considered to be early candidates like Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren, Indians coach Sandy Alomar Jr., and A's coach Chip Hale has not been contacted to be interviewed by the Mets.

Many have speculated the Mets to have Kevin Long as the frontrunner for the position even though he has no previous managerial experience.

Former Mets and current Dodgers outfielder Curtis Granderson, who played under Long as a Met and as a Yankee, said he believes Long has the potential to succeed in a managerial role.

"If that were to happen, then obviously he would be up for the challenge," Granderson said earlier this month. "He's always energetic, he communicates, which I think is the biggest thing a manager needs to have."
