Mets News: Matt Harvey Throws First Bullpen Session in St.Lucie (Video)
Matt Harvey threw off a mound for the first time since Tommy John surgery on Friday at Citi Field. On Tuesday afternoon, the official mound portion of his throwing program began in Port St. Lucie, Fla., with a 20-pitch session, after five warm-up throws. Harvey underwent the procedure on Oct. 22, 2013.
Matt Harvey reacted positively to the first “official” throwing session off a mound in his return from Tommy John surgery.
"Definitely getting off the mound is the part that you hear guys have some troubles,” Harvey said Tuesday in Port St. Lucie, Fla., after a 20-pitch throwing session, via SNY. “The way that it felt throwing from the first day, I think today definitely proved that right. It felt great."
Harvey said he still aims to pitch this year. Sandy Alderson has suggested the fall instructional league in Florida, which spans late September and early October, is realistic.
“That hasn’t changed,” Harvey said about his desire to pitch in 2014. “Once I started throwing, my mindset was to come back and compete and play. I loved being there in New York with the guys. I’m hoping the process keeps going smoothly, and you never know what can happen.
“The last thing you want to do is jeopardize the career, or 2015. I think everybody is trying to do their best to figure out what’s the right time, what’s exactly causing this injury so frequently. But, for me, I’ve felt great the whole time. It feels normal. It feels like nothing happened. When that happens, it’s hard to wait.”
