According to a report by John Harper of the Daily News, the Mets are an ideal candidate for a SS Starlin Castro Trade with the Cubs.
The Problem is who would the Mets give up to get him? The Cubs are looking to upgrade their farm system with pitching. The Mets have plenty of minor league pitchers, but it is up to the Mets to depart with some in order to get a deal done.
Harper suggest that Zack Wheeler and Jacob deGrom could get the deal in action, problem is the Mets are with injuries to Jon Niese and others like Matt Harvey.
If the Mets can get Harvey back to 100% and have Noah Syndergaard ready for 2015 the Mets will have some depth to deal with. Guys like Rafael Montero or Jacob deGrom could become available...
So would an offer of Wheeler convince Epstein to deal now? One baseball executive friendly with Epstein said it would take more.
“He’d want (Noah) Syndergaard,” the exec said. “That would be harder for the Mets to do. There’s still huge upside with him.
“Wheeler would be attractive — you can see the stuff is there for him to be a top-of-the-rotation guy. But think it would have to be Wheeler and another pitcher, maybe (Jacob) deGrom.”
The reports say the Mets most likely will be not selling the farm this season, but the might wait in the off-season to get something done.
Right now as I see it, I think Bartolo Colon might be the guy on his way out of New York. He is 41, and owed $10 Million in 2015 and the Mets could use that towards other areas of the ballclub.
Mets GM Alderson offered no hint of interest of Castro at Citi Field on Saturday to reporters.
Commenting on Castro would be grounds for tampering, anyway, but when asked about the value of having impact offense at shortstop, he smiled and said the Mets are very excited about Matt Reynolds.
Sounds about right with the Mets, sit on their hands and wait...
