Mets News: Mets Send Down Wilmer Flores to make room for Juan Lagares
Centerfielder Juan Lagares was activated from the disabled list after the Mets' 8-5 loss to the A's Wednesday night, and infielder Wilmer Flores was demoted. That leaves Terry Collins without a true backup shortstop, so Ruben Tejada will be expected to start every game for the time being.
In an emergency, Eric Campbell will be the shortstop. He's played only two games there, both this year with Triple-A Las Vegas. He made two errors, according to baseball-reference.com.
Lagares' return also means the outfield will become more talented, and more crowded, too. Collins admits he hasn't figured out how he can share the at-bats.
Curtis Granderson is assured of starting most games. Lagares was playing well as the everyday centerfielder before he left a game June 1 with pain in his rib cage, so presumably he'll play most days. That leaves Eric Young Jr., Chris Young and Bobby Abreu for one spot.
