Mets News and Notes: Gee will be with Mets on Thursday, Lagares hitting BP, Trading Chris Young, Mets demote Brown instead of den Dekker
Gee will be with Mets on Thursday
Dillon Gee is due to be at Marlins Park on Thursday for a bullpen session with Mets staff before the team's series opener against the Miami Marlins.
Gee threw off a mound on Monday in Port St. Lucie, Fla., for the first time since landing on the disabled list on May 11 with a strained right lat muscle.
That mound session Thursday should be the final step before Gee is cleared to face batters.
Lagares hitting BP
Meanwhile, Juan Lagares faced John Lannan in batting practice on Monday in Port St. Lucie. That signaled to Terry Collins that Lagares is nearing the beginning of a rehab assignment.
Lagares has been on the DL since June 2 with a strained intercostal muscle on his right side.
Trading Chris Young
In an ideal world, the Mets would be able to trade Chris Young before the July 31 deadline -- or even before Aug. 31, since his $7.25 million contract should easily pass through waivers. But even a team insider acknowledged having a market for him is a long-shot given his current production, even if the Mets picked up the remaining salary.
In the series opener at Busch Stadium, C.Y. was out of the lineup for a second straight day since striking out four times Saturday. He is hitting .196 with four homers in 163 at-bats.
Mets demote Brown instead of den Dekker
The Mets demoted Andrew Brown to clear the roster spot for the return of E.Y. Jr. from the disabled list. Terry Collins indicated a primary factor in selecting Brown over Matt den Dekker is den Dekker's ability to play center field.
