Recap: Game 41 - Mets (2) at Nationals (5) - Mets stunned in Washington

New York

W: T. Roark (3-1) L: J. Niese (2-3) S: R. Soriano (9)
HR: NYM - None   WAS - None

Tyler Moore drove in two runs and Washington's bullpen tossed four scoreless innings to help the Nationals take the opener of a three-game set from the New York Mets, 5-2, on Friday from Nationals Park.

Tanner Roark (3-1) allowed two runs on four hits over five innings for Washington, which improved to 4-0 against the Mets this season. Ross Detwiler, Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard all pitched a scoreless inning to hold the lead for Rafael Soriano, who survived a scare in the ninth to post his ninth save of the season.

After retiring the first two batters he faced, Soriano walked the next two and Daniel Murphy put a drive into the first pitch he saw only to have a jumping Jayson Werth catch it at the wall in right to end the game.

Moore, Werth and Scott Hairston all finished with two hits for the Nationals, while Werth, Hairston and Wilson Ramos drove in a run each in the triumph.

Jonathon Niese's (2-3) shortest outing of the season ended after surrendering five runs -- three earned -- on eight hits in four innings of work.

His previous season-low in innings pitched was 5 2/3 in his first start of the year on April 6.

Denard Span led off the bottom of the first with a single to right. David Wright's error at third allowed Anthony Rendon to reach base and Werth plated the game's first run with a single to left. Ramos then sent a sacrifice fly into center to plate Rendon.

Niese wasn't out of trouble yet, though, as he walked Ian Desmond and served up a single to Hairston to load the bags. Murphy bobbled Tyler Moore's sharp grounder to second, allowing Werth to score before the inning ended as Hairston was forced out at second and Desmond was caught in a rundown between third base and home.

After inducing three grounders to escape the second inning unscathed, Niese got into trouble again in the third as the Nats pushed two more runs across. Ramos started the rally with a single to center, Hairston doubled him home and Moore's RBI single to left made it 5-0.

The Mets went 22 2/3 innings between scoring, finally putting a run across in the fifth for the first time since the ninth inning of Tuesday's 12-7 win over the Yankees.

Lucas Duda led of the stanza with a single to center and Anthony Recker doubled to put the pair in scoring position. Duda scored on Ruben Tejada's groundout and two batters later, Eric Young Jr. doubled to left to cut the margin to 5-2.

Game Notes

The Nats opened a six-game homestand with a win following their 2-4 western road trip ... The Mets have lost three straight on the heels of a three-game winning streak.
