Mets News: Prospect Pitcher Whalen hospitalized with infection on right throwing hand

Mets News:

Mets pitching prospect Robert Whalen has been hospitalized with an infection on his right, throwing hand.

The infection is not MRSA and not believed to be overly serious. Still, Whalen is expected to need a minor invasive procedure to clean out the infection, which is above the knuckle on one of the fingers.

Whalen, 20, is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in four appearances (three starts) at low-A Savannah. He was selected in the 12th round of the 2012 draft out of high school in Florida.

The hand was sore while Whalen limited Delmarva to one run in six innings Thursday. The hand, which initially only had a small cut, ballooned Friday.

Whalen was placed on the South Atlantic League team’s disabled list.
