The Orioles have joined the Rays and Mets as teams discussing a deal with the Mariners for middle infielder Nick Franklin, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Baltimore would be interested in using Franklin at second base, where the team remains somewhat unsettled entering the season.
The Mariners have determined that they will go with Brad Miller, who is having a great spring, at shortstop. The likelihood of a trade somewhere seems strong at this point. Discussions are ongoing, according to Heyman.
The Mets are in need a shortstop, and have been scouting Franklin for that position. Second base might be Franklin's best position, but Mets scouts are gauging whether he can play shortstop.
The Mariners want young pitching in return. Obviously, Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero would have to be off the table, Maybe Jacob deGrom might fit the bill for Seattle. Nothing has been written in stone as of yet.
