Mets News: Mets Cut Four More Players, Flores among them
The New York Mets made some more cuts Monday, one of them was Wilmer Flores who was in the running for backup infielder. The others included...outfielders Matt den Dekker and Kirk Nieuwenhuis, and infielder Zach Lutz.
That leaves them with 33 players in camp including rehabbing pitchers Jon Niese, Matt Harvey, and Jeremy Hefner.
The Mets have said that Flores will continue to play shortstop in the minors in case Ruben Tejada fails to regain his form at the Major League level.
The Mets have to still make decisions on their roster and have five spots left if you minus the rehabbing pitchers. They have to decide if they want to carry Anthony Seratelli over Omar Quintanilla, with many speculating that Seratelli will get sent down.
They also have to decide if Jenrry Mejia will get the call over veteran Daisuke Matsuzaka for the 5th spot in the rotation, but Dice-K has a opt-out clause making him more likely to stay with the club. Mejia most likely will serve as insurance in case Jon Niese is not ready for his start on April 6th.
The Mets also have backup catcher Taylor Teagarden, corner infielder Eric Campbell, who will likely get sent down. Campbell, who has impressed this spring, but not on the 40 man roster. Gonzalez Germen should also get sent down as well.
The Mets will also make a decision who will get last spot on the active roster when Jon Niese officially goes on the 15 day DL. Outfielder Andrew Brown will likely get that spot on the roster..
The Mets are actively with 38 players on their 40 man roster. Harvey's move to DL will make it 37. The Mets need to make room for John Lannan, Dice-K, Omar Quintanilla, and Jose Valverde. That means the Mets will need one spot available with Ryan Reid being speculated as the causality of circumstance.
