Ike Davis batted during Thursday's intrasquad game without running. Afterward, the first baseman said Friday is too soon for him to return to the Grapefruit League lineup. Davis has been dealing with cranky calves.
Davis was quoted on ESPN:
"The good thing is it doesn't hurt to swing, so I can get at-bats and stuff like that," Davis said. "I've just got to wait a little bit longer for running, so the point in my calves to the touch don't hurt anymore. It's both calves. My left one is better than my right. My right one is a little bit worse. But it's getting better every day. Today it felt better than it did yesterday. So hopefully in the next couple of days I'll be able to start running. I'm trying to get as many at-bats so I don't miss that part of it -- like today. And then obviously as soon as I'm able to play, I'll be playing a bunch."
Davis believes his calf injuries were related to weight room activity..
"I think I did something in the weight room where I was lifting. And I kind of weakened them," Davis said. "And then in the game it just tightened up. That's the thing -- it wasn't painful. It just felt tight. And then the next day they were obviously a lot tighter than I thought they were going to be.
"You know, I'd rather miss a little bit now than completely tear it or pull it so I miss a month or the beginning of the season. This is the time to actually get healthy. I'm still getting my work in. I'm still seeing pitching, like I did today."
