Mets News: Bullpen Notes - Valverde, Black, Germen, Farnsworth
Once penciled in as the primary set-up man for Bobby Parnell, Vic Black instead was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday morning. That appears good news for Gonzalez Germen's chances of making the Opening Day roster.
Black, acquired Aug. 29 from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the trade for Marlon Byrd and John Buck, allowed 13 hits and 10 walks in 9 1/3 Grapefruit League innings. He had a 5.79 ERA in 10 appearances.
The Mets also made if official, adding Jose Valverde to the 40-man roster Wednesday.
Valverde may serve as Bobby Parnell's primary set-up man. The bullpen also is expected to include Jeurys Familia, Carlos Torres, Gonzalez Germen, Scott Rice and John Lannan.
Valverde, 36, has a 3.00 ERA 0.889 WHIP in nine Grapefruit League innings.
Three days after Kyle Farnsworth was released by the Mets, the veteran reliever officially re-signed Wednesday on a minor-league deal.
Farnsworth's new deal, which saved the Mets a $100,000 retention bonus they were unwilling to pay, is believed to include an out in May if he is not promoted to the big-league club by then.
