Mets Rumors: Johan Santana getting closer to signing minor league contract
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Johan Santana is getting closer to making a decision on a minor league deal with a team.
There were reports in early December that the Mets and seven other teams have expressed some interest.
There’s been some speculation about the Twins since Santana still resides in Fort Myers, Fla., where the Twins have spring training. The Red Sox, who also train in Fort Myers, passed.
But a small-market team such as the Astros could also have some interest. Santana is just trying to get back pitching and prove himself again.
The Mets can sign Johan, but right now they are looking for some stability in the fifth starter spot. The Mets are expected to let a handful of candidates such as Jenrry Mejia, Rafael Montero, Jacob deGrom battle it out in camp this spring..
Number one pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard is expected to start in Triple-A Vegas in 2014 with a possibility of getting called up in late August or September.
