Mets Rumors: Ike Davis still in the middle of the pack of first basemen to be dealt, but soon?
The Ike Davis sweepstakes has begun in the first basemen market.
Guys like Free Agent 1B James Loney still have to find a home.
The losers of this player (probably Pittsburgh will sign him) make Ike Davis become more valuable. Trade candidates Justin Smoak (Mariners) and Mitch Moreland (Rangers) are also still out there in possible deals.
The Rays and Brewers seem to have the edge to obtain Ike Davis. The Brewers lost out on Corey Hart/Logan Morrison and seem they might turn to Ike Davis. But the price for Davis will cost the Brewers their Top Pitching Chip.... Tyler Thornburg. The Brewers seem reluctant to part with prospect, but might have to pull the trigger soon with other team in the hunt like Pittsburgh and Astros.
But the Mets believe that they hold a valuable card in Davis, who recorded an OPS of .954 over his final 40 games before sustaining a season-ending oblique strain in August.
"It's tough to get anybody's top prospect," Alderson said. "Everybody knows that."
The Rays probably would have to almost positively give up OF Matthew Joyce in any deal.. Ben Zobrist would not be bad either. (wink!)
In a day or so the Mets will have a better idea who wants what and at what price. All these teams include the Astros, Brewers, Rays, and Pittsburgh still out there looking and scrambling for first basemen.
Somethings got to give, maybe another pitching prospect might be worth waiting for, this is not fantasy baseball , so in the Mets case might be worth it.
