Mets Rumors: First Base Market Shrinking For Ike Davis, Down to Two Teams
The first base market is shrinking for Ike Davis and only two teams could be ideal landing spots.
The Brewers and Orioles appear to have some interest in acquiring the left handed slugger, but the Mets appear to have a high price tag that would require teams to have a prospect pitcher in return.
The Mets thought process is to acquire someone like the Marlins did (Carter Capps) for 1B Logan Morrison, but teams are not biting.
The Pirates had some interest in Davis, but they acquired 1B Chris McGuiness from the Rangers yesterday in exchange for RHP Miles Mikolas, so that would put them out of the mix. The Mets wanted one of their top pitching prospects RHP Nick Kingham, but that got rejected.
The Brewers on the other hand do not have a starting first basemen since the departure of Cory Hart to Seattle, so that might rekindle some interest. But the Mets want pitching prospect RHP Tyler Thornburg, who is projected to man their 5th spot in the Brewers rotation. The Brewers also have expressed some interest in free agent 1B/3B Michael Young, so that might be another road block for the Mets.
The Orioles are another team on the Davis bandwagon, but they don't seem as desperate as the Brewers. The Mets have asked for their pitching prospect LHP Eduardo Rodriguez and that got shot down. Apparently through reports the Orioles would trade Rodriguez, but would have to be blown away by the offer and Davis does not barrel them over.
You can concede to the fact that the Mets want to shed Davis' salary after adding OF Chris Young, OF Curtis Granderson, and RHP Bartolo Colon. Ike Davis is expected to make around $3.5 Million this year in arbitration and it not likely he will be sent down or be on the bench in 2014.
The Mets worst case scenario is to go to camp with Davis and Lucas Duda and let them battle it out. For one, it will give teams a chance to scout Ike Davis and see if he has made any progress or digress. Hey anything can happen in baseball, a team that now has a first basemen could get injured and needs will have to be fulfilled through trade (at least the Mets are hoping).
I think Ike Davis would make them a better team now with all the other additions. The lessened pressure of being the only power guy behind David Wright would benefit Davis' mentally. Davis' defense at first would also benefit them as well over Duda. Hopefully Ike Davis can put those big numbers up again and make Mets fans believe in him after his dreadful 2013 season. This was a player that the Fans loved and now has faded to the black hole of the abyss. Remember the "I Like Ike" shirts, LOL.
But, it all remains to be seen if he will wear the blue and orange in 2014.
