Mets News: Juan Lagares Leads National League in assists

Mets News:

Starting in right field for the first time in his major league career in order to accommodate Matt den Dekker starting alongside him, Lagares recorded his National League-leading 12th outfield assist.

Lagares threw out Bryce Harper attempting a triple in the eighth inning to tie Tsuyoshi Shinjo’s 2001 mark for the Mets’ rookie outfield assist record.

“That’s great,” Lagares said about his assists. “I like to throw when I’ve got the ball. I just want to keep throwing, keep doing what I’ve been doing.”

As for moving to right field to allow den Dekker to play center, Lagares added: “I understand the situation. I played a lot of right field in the minors. I know ‘Dek’ is very good at center field, but he doesn’t play in right field. I think it makes sense.”

Said Terry Collins: “I talked to him before the game -- ‘Hey, look, you’re a center fielder. I know that. You know that. But the other guy has not played right field. And it would be tough for him to go out there. And I know you can play out there.’ So when they’re both in the game, that’s probably how it’s going to line up. But he played very well out there tonight.”
