St. Lucie Mets Gulf Coast League baseball player Alex Romero is charged with shoplifting and allegedly throwing a Bealls Department Store official to the ground while fleeing and resisting arrest, according to police reports and a spokesman.
He plays catcher under the name of Alex Machillanda in the Gulf Coast Mets.
Police quoted store officials as saying they witnessed him removing price tags from clothing and allegedly concealing them in his backpack before leaving the store around 6 p.m. Monday.
“When a store loss prevention officer attempted to stop Romero for not paying for the clothes, Romero punched the .....officer and took him to the ground, slamming his head on the concrete,” the reports said.
Officers allegedly arrived in time to capture him, still “he resisted by yelling and pulling away from the officers.”
Romero, of the 8500 block of Champions Way, Port St. Lucie, was charged with felony shoplighting, resisting a merchant, battery and resisting an officer without violence.
Police officials say stolen clothing found in his backpack was returned to the store in the 1700 block of Northwest St. Lucie Boulevard.
He is in the St. Lucie County Jail is lieu of a $40,000 bail. The St. Lucie Mets is affiliated with the New York Mets baseball organization.
