Highly regarded pitching prospect Rafael Montero has been promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas, apparently for a Monday spot start on his normal day to pitch.
Binghamton manager Pedro Lopez told the Press & Sun-Bulletin that Montero is only expected to remain with the 51s for one start, then return to Double-A.
Las Vegas’ rotation got disrupted with Collin McHugh’s promotion to the Mets and Zack Wheeler not set to reenter until Wednesday. The 51s’ rotation also includes Chris Schwinden, D.J. Mitchell, Carlos Torres and Matt Fox.
Montero, 22, is 4-3 with a 3.47 ERA in eight starts for Binghamton this season. However, subtract a May 1 start in which he allowed seven earned runs and his Eastern League ERA dips to 2.45.
