Francisco opened the season on the disabled list after undergoing surgery in December to remove a bone spur, then experiencing inflammation in his right elbow during spring training.
He has pitched in simulated games in Port St. Lucie and registered as high as 92 mph. But pitching coach Dan Warthen said Francisco, once he gets into formal games, still must twice establish that he can pitch on consecutive days.
Bobby Parnell, who has yet to have a save opportunity, very likely will keep the closer's job even after Francisco ultimately returns.
