Report: Mets unlikely to sign Closer Jose Valverde

According to Andy Martino of the NY Daily News, the Mets are unlikely to sign former Tiger closer Jose Valverde, who turns 35 next month. The club expects Valverde to eventually find a major league deal elsewhere.

If he is amenable to a minor league deal later in camp, the Mets might be open to that — but as of right now, a fit does not seem likely.

With Frank Francisco still unable to throw because of his elbow issues, Terry Collins named Bobby Parnell the Mets' closer last week, a position he could retain even when Francisco returns. The Mets also have Brandon Lyon in camp, a veteran expected to handle the eighth inning, but with ample closing experience.
