Meet the Mess II - The Return of the Disabled List - Pelfrey Goes Too
A bad afternoon for the Mets has only gotten worse. Mike Pelfrey will join Jason Bay on the disabled list, after an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery this morning revealed inflammation in his right elbow.
Pelfrey went to the hospital for a preliminary examination after experiencing a “grab” in his elbow at the start of each inning during his last start. He believed the condition came from tendinitis, which he has overcome easily before. But doctors have yet to rule out ligament damage, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said, which raises the ugly specter of Tommy John surgery.
Robert Carson will take Pelfrey’s place on the roster for the next three days. On Friday, Pelfrey’s turn in the rotation, the team will call up a starter from Triple A. Chris Schwinden appears to be the most likely candidate. Alderson ruled out calling up top prospects Matt Harvey and Jeurys Familia.
