Mets to Honor Gary Carter on Opening Day

Gary Carter, who died last month from brain cancer, will be honored during a pre-game ceremony at Citi Field on opening day.

The Mets are scheduled to begin the regular season against the Atlanta Braves on April 5. After a moment of silence, Carter’s family will be on the field for the ceremonial first pitch. The Mets have been wearing a patch on their uniforms bearing the No. 8 in Carter’s memory.

“Mets fans will have the chance to pay their respects and remember all of his accomplishments,” Jeff Wilpon, the team’s chief operating officer, said in a statement.

Carter won the World Series with the Mets in 1986 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
