R.A. Dickey will be honored at the Thurman Munson Awards next month

Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey will be honored next month at the Thurman Munson Awards in New York City, the Mets announced Thursday. Named after the late Yankees catcher and administered in part by his widow, Diane, who has attended 31 straight ceremonies, the awards honor "on-field excellence and community service" in the New York sports community.

This year's awards banquet will also recognize Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, basketball Hall of Famer Chris Mullin and Yankees Hall of Famer Yogi Berra, who will receive the Munson Legend Award during the Jan. 31 ceremony in Manhattan.

Both outspoken and active throughout his career in support of community service
initiatives, Dickey was instrumental in establishing Honoring the Father ministries last decade, which has grown into a sprawling nonprofit organization, distributing baseball and medical supplies and constructing churches throughout the Caribbean. Next month, Dickey will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in support of Red Light District Outreach Mumbai, which combats human trafficking in India.

Previous Mets Munson Award winners include Tom Seaver, John Franco, Darryl Strawberry, Mike Piazza, David Wright, Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, Carlos Beltran, Rusty Staub and Gary Carter.

The annual gala, which also serves as a memorial to the late Yankees catcher and captain, benefits AHRC-New York City Foundation, a nonprofit organization benefiting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
