Mets sign Mike Baxter to a minor League Contract

Four days after he was bounced from the Mets major-league roster, Mike Baxter agreed to a minor-league deal to remain with the club. Baxter, a 27-year-old outfielder from Whitestone, received an invitation to major-league camp.

The Mets claimed Baxter off waivers from the San Diego Padres last summer. He managed a .791 on-base plus slugging percentage during a brief call-up.

Baxter was non-tendered on Monday evening to make room on the 40-man roster for free-agent acquisition Jon Rauch. The team is still juggling pieces on its roster, as it needs to also add reliever Frank Francisco to the roster. Plus, they still have interest in finding a backup shortstop, keeping in contact with the agents for veterans Ronny Cedeno and Jack Wilson.
